Tex-Mex cuisine could be considered as being a type or style of Mexican cuisine, of the type or style practiced with gusto in Texas. In addition to the ancient roots of many of its ingredients and types of food items, Tex-Mex cuisine is a vibrant cuisine which is becoming increasingly known and ably practiced throughout the world.

Perhaps the very most fundamental recipes of Tex-Mex cuisine to learn and attempt to master are tacos (including an appropriate main filling), pinto beans (including refried beans), enchiladas, and fajitas. Tortillas are a very fundamental part of Tex-Mex cuisine, although, in modern times, tortillas are often purchased, rather than being made by exclusively by hand, a primary emphasis being on freshness.

Tex-Mex cuisine is distinguishable from Texas cuisine in that the foundations of Texas cuisine seem to relate more to a cuisine developed by settlers who immigrated to Texas from the U.S. in the 1800’s (with substantial contributions from other cuisines of the time), although there are overlaps, similarities, and borrowing between the two.
