Tennis[edit | edit source]

Study the following story using the hover method and the vocabulary. Then have a good look at the translation to see if you had missed something. Then move on to the exercises below.

Translation • Lesson 8A • Tennis

It was do or die. There could be no doubt about that. The next opponent against whom he had to play tennis, was a very good player, from whom everybody expected a victory. It was even said of him that he would be the new champion. He had to take that into account. But he was not afraid of that anyway. He had experienced this before. He knew he was in good shape, and with that he could cause a surprise. In good spirits he went to the locker room.

Exercise 8A[edit | edit source]

YOUR TURN - UW BEURT!! • Lesson 8A • Find the pronominal adverbs

Find the pronominal adverbs in the above story and explain what they replace

SOLUTION • Dutch/Lesson 8A • Find the pronominal adverbs
Het was erop of eronder.
Erop of eronder is a fixed expression meaning on top of it or on the bottom of it, it being a heap of bodies of the battle field.
Daaraan viel niet te twijfelen.
Twijfelen usually gets the preposition aan: aan iets twijfelen -(to doubt something). The locative element daar refers back to the previous sentence
De volgende tegenstander waar hij tegen moest tennissen, was een hele goede speler, waarvan iedereen winst verwachtte.
Official grammar would still frown on these two replacements and demand tegen wie (against whom) and van wie (of whom) instead, but in anything but formal Dutch this is generally accepted.
Er werd zelfs van gezegd dat hij de nieuwe kampioen zou zijn.
Ervan again refers back to the opponent.
Daarmee moest hij rekening houden.
To take something into account is rekening houden met. The locative part daar refers back to the previous sentence.
Maar daarvoor was hij toch niet bang.
To be afraid of is bang zijn voor Daar refers back to the previous.
Hij had hiermee wel meer ervaring.
To have experience with is ervaring hebben met
Hij wist dat hij goed in vorm was en daarmee kon hij voor een verrassing zorgen. Welgemoed ging hij naar de kleedkamer.
With the fact that he was in good shape he could cause an upset.

Notice that the pronominal adverb often reflects a fixed preposition.

YOUR TURN - UW BEURT!! • Lesson 8A • Replace the bold noun by a pronoun or pronominal adverb.
Hij sloeg de bal met zijn racket
Hij raakte het net met de bal.
De volgende bal ging goed over het net.
Die bal was uit.
De scheidsrechter floot en gaf met dat signaal te kennen dat hij gescoord had.
De tegenstander protesteerde tegen deze beslissing.
De scheidsrechter hield geen rekening met dit protest
Na die eerste drie sets stond hij een set vóór.
De vijfde set maakte een einde aan zijn droom
Zijn aandeel in dit kampioenschap was ten einde.
SOLUTION • Dutch/Lesson 8A • Replace the bold noun by a pronoun or pronominal adverb.
Hij sloeg de bal ermee.
Hij raakte het met de bal.
De volgende bal ging er goed over.
Die was uit.
De scheidsrechter floot en gaf met daarmee te kennen dat hij gescoord had.
De tegenstander protesteerde hiertegen.
De scheidsrechter hield hier geen rekening mee
Daarna stond hij een set vóór.
De vijfde set maakte er een einde aan
Zijn aandeel erin was ten einde.

Translation:

He hit the ball with his racket
He touched the net with the ball.
The next ball went over the net well.
That ball was out.
The umpire whistled and with that signal he made clear that he had scored.
The opponent protested this decision
The umpire did not take the protest into consideration
After those first three sets he was one set ahead
The fifth set put an end to his dream.
His part in this championship had ended.

Splitting pronominal adverbs[edit | edit source]

Splitting pronominal adverbs is a tricky problem of word order. Let's make a simple start with it here. You have seen that in perfect tenses the verb is split:

Hij heeft het geld voor een feestje gebruikt.

We have also seen that voor een feestje can be replaced by ervoor, but this word is separable. It can be split in two parts the locative adverb er and the prepositional adverb voor. Watch what happens when it splits up:

Hij heeft het geld voor een feestje gebruikt.
Hij heeft het geld ervoor gebruikt.
Hij heeft er het geld voor gebruikt.[2]

You could say that the two verbal centers act as magnets that split the pronominal adverb ervoor up in its two components and attract the two resulting adverbs. This even holds true if the verbal expression at the end is missing as it is in the present tense:

Hij gebruikt het geld voor een feestje.
Hij gebruikt het geld ervoor.
Hij gebruikt er het geld voor.
