ਸਬਜੀਆਂ - Vegetables[edit | edit source]

ਗੋਭੀ - Cauliflower

Vegetables, called ਸਬਜੀਆਂ in Punjabi, are an essential part of a Punjabi meal. Here are common vegetables of Punjab.

  1. ਗੋਭੀ = cauliflower
  2. ਬੰਦ ਗੋਭੀ = cabbage
  3. ਆਲੂ = potato
  4. ਬਤਾਊਂ/ਬੈਂਗਣ = brinjal/eggplant
  5. ਭਿੰਡੀ = okra/ladies finger
  6. ਮਟਰ = peas
  7. ਘੀਆ = gourd
  8. ਟੀਂਡਾ = apple gourd
  9. ਕਰੇਲਾ = bitter gourd
  10. ਪੇਠਾ = wax gourd
  11. ਤੋਰੀ = sponge gourd
  12. ਗੰਢਾ/ਪਿਆਜ਼ = onion
  13. ਟਮਾਟਰ/ਟਮਾਟਾ = tomato
  14. ਲਸਣ = garlic
  15. ਅਦਰਕ = ginger
  16. ਸੁੰਢ = dried ginger
  17. ਖੁੰਭ = mushroom
  18. ਫਲ਼ੀਆਂ = beans
  19. ਰਾਜ ਮਾਂਹ = kidney beans
  20. ਗਾਜਰ = carrot
  21. ਮੂਲੀ = radish
  22. ਚੁਕੰਦਰ = beetroot
  23. ਗੋਂਗਲੂ/ਸ਼ਲਗਮ = turnip
  24. ਅਰਵੀ/ਅਰਬੀ = taro root
  25. ਜਿਮੀਕੰਦ = elephant foot yam
  26. ਸ਼ਿਮਲਾ ਮਿਰਚ = capsicum (Red,Green,Yellow Pepper)
  27. ਖੀਰਾ = cucumber
  28. ਤਰ = snake cucumber
  29. ਪਾਲਕ = spinach
  30. ਧਨੀਆ = coriander plant and seeds
  31. ਪੂਦਨਾ/ਪੁਦੀਨਾ = mint

1. Write names of ten vegetables in Punjabi.
2. Recall that regular noun forms ending with kanna bear masculine gender and those ending with bihari bear feminine gender. That is true even for inanimate things like vegetables. Now use this to identify the three masculine nouns and two feminine nouns among the above list of vegetables.
