Fortree City, known as Hiwamaki City (ヒワマキシティ Hiwamaki Shiti) in the original Japanese version, is a city in the region of Hoenn, which is part of the Pokémon World. It was built atop the trees (everything except the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart and the Gym), giving it its name. There is a trainer in Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire that will trade you a Skitty for a Pikachu. In Pokémon Emerald, a younger trainer in the same house wants to trade a Plusle for a Volbeat.

Places of interest[edit | edit source]

Pokémon gym[edit | edit source]

The main feature of the town is the gym, holding the leader, Winona, and her badge which the player needs to collect to proceed, the Feather Badge. Unfortunately, it is blocked by an invisible "wall" at first. The player must claim the Devon Scope from Steven a little out of town and use it to scare the Kecleon hiding there away.

The gym trainers and its leader use only flying types. The gym itself is set up with turning doors, that when pushed on turn the whole door set and create a puzzle, as the doors can only be opened in one direction. If the player gets by these puzzles, they fight the leader, Winona.

If she is defeated, the player receives the Feather Badge, the sixth of the eight badges to get into the Pokémon League.

Other[edit | edit source]

In the southeastern part of the city, there is a shop that sells accessories for the player's secret base such as tables and chairs.

West of the city in Route 119 is the Weather Institute. Not technically part of the city, it is still a critical element of the game's plot. Here, scientists have invented the weather-controlling Pokémon, Castform. When Team Magma (in Ruby) or Team Aqua (Sapphire and Emerald) invade the facility, the player must fight them off and receives Castform as a reward for freeing the researchers. At the end of the game in Pokémon Emerald, the Weather Institute plays a larger role by alerting you to the location of the legendary Pokémon, Groudon and Kyogre.

East of the city is the Scorched Slab, a small cave that can be accessed by surfing in the north lake of Route 120. The only thing of note inside is the only location of TM11, which allows a pokemon to be taught the move Sunny Day.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Fortree City is a small city in size, but it has a large population in comparison to other cities with a larger size. The population of Fortree City is 26.
