Cinnabar Island (グレンじま, Guren-Jima, Guren Island in the original Japanese) is a volcanic island in the Pokémon series. It is located in the Kanto region.

Places of interest

[edit | edit source]

It is the home of a laboratory, an abandoned mansion, and a Pokémon gym.

Laboratory

[edit | edit source]

A Pokémon lab is located here. It is host to a fossil resurrection machine, which allows the player to revive fossilzed Pokémon that he or she has found at various parts in the game. The player can get an Aerodactyl and an Omanyte or Kabuto.

Pokémon Mansion

Pokémon Mansion is an abandoned residence north of the Pokémon Lab. According to books found inside, scientists were conducting research on Mew. They had succeeded in cloning Mew, creating Mewtwo, but it grew too powerful and destroyed the Mansion. Afterwards, it is home to many wild Pokémon and various trainers train here, including burglars looking for items that would fetch a good price. In FireRed and LeafGreen, it is revealed that Mr. Fuji once lived in Cinnabar Mansion and is an old friend of Blaine's.

The gym leader here is Blaine (Katsura). He trains Fire-type Pokémon. Initially, the gym door is locked, and the player must go through Pokémon Mansion to find the key. Rather than trainers, Blaine has set up a number of machines that will ask a question. If the player answers correctly, he or she will advance to the next room. Answering incorrectly will result in a trainer battle.

Cinnabar Island in Gold/Silver/Crystal

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Cinnabar Island has been destroyed due of a volcano, and every building on the island except the Pokémon Center is gone. Blaine relocated his gym to the nearby Seafoam Islands, which in turn was reduced to a small cavern.

Though it is never seen on Cinnabar Island, the Cinnabar Volcano Burger is enjoyed in New Bark Town of the nearby Johto region.

Glitches

Cinnabar Island is almost always where Missingno. appears.

The east coast of Cinnabar Island is full of glitches that can be found in the Pokémon Red and Blue versions. The Missingno. and 'M glitches are the most well-known, but there's also a Glitch City that can be accessed. It is not the largest Glitch City (That honor goes to the one accessed from route 6)[citation needed] but it has some strange effects not seen in other glitch cities. In the Red and Blue versions Pokémon from the last place you visited seem to always show up on the coast.

There is also a minor glitch in which the bald man in Cinnabar appears on the gym roof for a few seconds. In order to see this, the player has to make sure that they don't have the secret key on them. Then they should surf on the east coast, going upwards until they are level with the gym door. Then they should step back onto land to the left. A message will pop-up saying, "the door is locked". The bald man should appear to be sitting on the roof for a few seconds before returning back to the ground. In the later games of Fire Red and Leaf Green, the bald man has moved to the bottom of the town.
