Dried cloves

Cookbook | Recipes | Ingredients | Spices and herbs

Cloves are the aromatic dried buds of a tree native to Indonesia, used as a spice in virtually all the world's cuisine. They can be used in cooking either whole or in a ground form, but they are extremely strong so they are used sparingly.

Cloves produce a mild numbing of the mouth and lips if eaten in large quantities.

[edit] Uses of cloves

One use of cloves is as flavouring in stewed apple.

Whole cloves can be stuck by the stalk into meat, especially pork, as it is roasted to infuse a mild flavour.
