Coffee liqueur is a sweet, aromatic alcoholic beverage flavored with coffee.[1]

Characteristics

[edit | edit source]

The primary spirit base—often rum or vodka—is infused with coffee essence to make a blend of strong coffee flavor and the richness of alcohol. Sugar imparts a sweetness that complements the inherent bitterness of coffee.[1][2] Depending on the region or brand, various other ingredients like vanilla, chocolate, or spices might be added to enhance its depth of flavor.

Selection and storage

[edit | edit source]

Different brands of coffee liqueur will have slightly different flavor profiles, varying especially in the sweetness level. Choose the brand that will best complement your recipe.

Consumed on its own in cocktails or as a dessert ingredient, coffee liqueur has several applications. As a cocktail component, coffee liqueur is well-known in the White Russian and Black Russian.[1] When incorporated into desserts, such as custards it typically acts as a flavoring.[1]
