Matzo meal, sometimes spelled matzah meal, is a variety of breadcrumbs made by finely grinding matzah.[1][2]

Characteristics

[edit | edit source]

Matzo meal is typically very dry and fairly flavorless. There are two main types—standard matzo meal looks much like standard breadcrumbs, with a relatively coarse crumb, while matzo cake meal is much finer and closer to the consistency of flour.[1][2]

Matzo meal is used in a variety of applications, from breading to binder to a kosher-for-Passover flour substitute.[3] It can also be used as a filler in casseroles or to make dumplings.
