Fried Liver Attack

[edit | edit source]

Attacking the central knight. Black must reply by moving the c6-knight to b4 (defending d5 with tempo and preparing c6).

8. ... Ne7?? is a huge mistake that lets white open the center with 9. d4! and strengthen the attack on the black king.

After 8. ... Nd4??, instead, 9. Bxd5+ followed by 10. Qd1 let white get back the piece and defend the c2 pawn. Black has survived the attack but is a pawn down with a very weak e pawn.
