Black ends White's pressure on the c6 knight.

7. Bb3 is necessary to save the bishop and the typical, automatic move.

From time to time some bright spark will wheel out 7. d5?!, the Richter variation, which can entrap Black if they avoid trading knight for bishop.

7. Nxe5!?, the Friess attack, can lead to a number of trades and an equal position. 7...Nxe5 8. dxe5 bxa4 9. Qd5 Rb8 10. Qxe4.
