Frosting and icing are both sugar-based toppings used primarily for pastries and cakes.

Frosting is generally thick and creamy due to a high fat content (usually from butter) whereas icing is more often thin and made up mostly of sugar. When icing dries it becomes hard to the touch while frosting stays somewhat moist for a considerable time after being applied. Frosting is most often used on cakes while icing is more often found on cookies or muffins.
