Overview

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) are used to uniquely identify motor vehicles. Prior to 1980 there was not an accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats. Modern day VINs consist of 17 characters that do not include the letters I, O or Q.

Parts of the VIN[edit | edit source]

Modern Vehicle Identification Number systems are based on two related standards originally issued by the ISO in 1979 and 1980, ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, respectively. Compatible but somewhat different implementations of these ISO standards have been adopted by the European Union and the United States of America [1].

The VIN is composed of the following sections:

Each manufacturer has a unique system for using this field. Most manufacturers since the 1980s have used the 8th digit to identify the engine type whenever there is more than one engine choice for the vehicle. Example: for the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette U= 6.0L V8, E= 7.0L V8.

Check digit

One element that is fairly consistent in VIN numbers is the use of position 9 as a Check digit, compulsory for vehicles in North America and used fairly consistently even outside this rule except in the United Kingdom where the check digit is not used.

If trying to validate a VIN with a check digit, first either: (a) remove the check digit for the purpose of calculation; or (b) utilize the multiplicative property of zero in the weight to cancel it out. You should later compare the old value of the check-bit, with the new to ensure the VIN's validity.

Overview of the process[edit | edit source]

An overview of the process for calculating a VIN's check digit is as follows:

  1. Remove all of the letters from the VIN by transliterating them with their numeric counterparts. Numerical counterparts can be found in the table below.
  2. Multiply this new number, the yield of the transliteration, with the assigned weight. Weights can be found in the table below.
  3. Sum the resulting products.
  4. Modulus the sum of the products by 11, to find the remainder.
  5. If the remainder is 10 replace it with X.

Transliterating the numbers[edit | edit source]

Transliteration consists of removing all of letters and substituting them with their appropriate numerical counterparts. These numerical alternatives can be found in the following chart. I, O and Q are not allowed, and can not exist in a valid VIN; for the purpose of this chart, they have been filled in with N/A (not applicable). Numerical digits use their own values.

S is 2, and not 1. There is no left-alignment linearity.

Weights used in calculation[edit | edit source]

The following is the weight factor for each position in the VIN. The 9th position is that of the check digit. It has been substituted with a 0, which will cancel it out in the multiplication step.

Consider the hypothetical VIN 1M8GDM9A_KP042788, where the underscore will be the check digit.

  1. The VIN's Value is calculated from the above table, this number will be used in the rest of the calculation.
  2. Copy over the weights from the above table.
  3. The products row is a result of the multiplication of the vertical columns: Value and Weight.
  4. The products (8,28,48,35..24,16) are all added together to yield a sum of 351
  5. One of the following operations:
    • 351 % 11 = 10 (where % is a modulo operator)
    • 351 ÷ 11 = 31 10/11
    • 351 ÷ 11 = 31.9090-
  6. The check digit is 10, so it has been transliterated into X.

With a check digit of 'X' the VIN: 1M8GDM9A?KP042788 is written with the check bit as: 1M8GDM9AXKP042788.

Straight-ones (seventeen consecutive '1's) will suffice the check-digit. This is because a value of one, multiplied against 89 (sum of weights), is still 89. And 89 % 11 is 1, the check digit. This is an easy way to test a vin-check algorithm.

Vehicle Identifier Section

The 10th through 17th positions are used as the Vehicle Identifier Section or VIS. This is used by the manufacturer to identify the individual vehicle in question. This may include information on options installed or engine and transmission choices, but often is a simple sequential number. In fact, in North America, the last five digits must be numeric.

One consistent element of the VIS is character number 10, which is required (in North America) to encode the model year of the vehicle.

North American Plant Code[edit | edit source]

Another consistently-used element (which is compulsory in North America) is the use of the 11th character to encode the factory of manufacture of the vehicle. Although each manufacturer has their own set of plant codes, their location in the VIN is standardized.



Model year

The model year is encoded in position 10 of North American VIN codes. Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the year code. Note that the year code can be the calendar year in which a vehicle is built, or a model or type year allocated by the manufacturer. The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysler, as "A" (since the 17-digit VIN wasn't mandatory until 1981, and the "A" or zero was in the manufacturer's pre-1981 placement in the VIN), yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980. Subsequent years increment through the allowed letters, so that "Y" represents the year 2000. 2001 through 2009 are encoded as the digits 1 through 9, and subsequent years are encoded as "A", "B", "C", etc.

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

World Manufacturer Identifier[edit | edit source]

The first three characters uniquely identify the manufacturer of the vehicle using the World Manufacturer Identifier or WMI code. A manufacturer that builds fewer than 1000 vehicles per year uses a 9 as the third digit and the 12th, 13th and 14th position of the VIN for a second part of the identification. Some manufacturers use the third character as a code for a vehicle category (e.g., bus or truck), a division within a manufacturer, or both. For example, within 1G (assigned to General Motors in the United States), 1G1 represents Chevrolet passenger cars; 1G2, Pontiac passenger cars; and 1GC, Chevrolet trucks.

WMI Regions[edit | edit source]

The first character of the WMI is the region in which the manufacturer is located. In practice, each is assigned to a country of manufacture. Common auto-manufacturing countries are noted. [1]

Australian VIN format[edit | edit source]

Ford Australia have used the same basic system for chassis numbers on Australian assembled vehicles since the early 1960s.[1] When Australia went to mandatory 17-digit VINs in 1989, the Ford chassis numbers became 17-digit VINs by the addition of 6FPAAA ahead of the original numbering system.[2] With the exception of some L-series (Louisville) trucks fitted with other brands of engine, engine numbers match the VIN with the 6FPAAA omitted.

GM/VIN Codes

It is the tenth digit that gives you the model year for GM. I've been working at a Chevy dealer for years running codes/vins. For example (my examples only apply to 2001-2015 gm vehicles) Remember 10th digit from the beginning, (left to right). 2001... 1 2002...2 2003...3 .etc . . 2009...9 After 09 the tenth digit was given a letter 2010... A 2011...B 2012...C 2013...D 2014...E 2015...F Etc... We have another 20 years worth of letters Thanks for reading. You can always check your model year by looking in your drivers side door jamb and it will give you model year. If it was assembled in July or later it's probably a model year later than listed.

GM has traditionally encoded the platform as the fourth character of the VIN. Other content includes an engine code and manufacturing plant. GM's VIN format is as follows:

Platform codes[edit | edit source]

GM used a lettered system of automobile platform codes for three decades. These letters were used as the fourth position of the VIN. Though today's GM platforms use Greek characters, they are still encoded with Latin characters in the fourth position. Position five encodes the specific model and trim level of the vehicle.

Engine codes for passenger cars[edit | edit source]

2010 Chevy Malibu engine code B, 2.4L Mistake on the engine code M, this M code comes out on the 1995 - 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the engine is an RPO L82 3.1 SFI engine. This engine made it's first appearance on the A-Body sisters Buick Century and Oldsmobile's Cutlass Ciera "S", the 1994 L-Body Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica, and it's N-Body siblings, which include the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Achieva, and Pontiac Grand Am, but Oldsmobile also had offerings of this engine offering in the "Late" 1993 W-Body Cutlass for the engine to also incorporate into the 1994 model year W-Bodies, which included the Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, with the aforementioned Monte Carlo and it's sedan equivalent, the revised Lumina to follow suit the next model year, 1995. It continued it's second iteration, the LG8 3.1 in 2000 (VIN code "J"), which finally ceased production in the 2005 model year W-Body version of the Century.

VIN code T also designates a 3.1 V6, the base engine in the 1990-92 Camaro/Firebird platform, and VIN code 8 is much better known as the L98 5.7 V8 TPI, standard in the 1985-91 Corvette and optional in the 1987-92 Camaro/Firebird platform .

Missing Entry: 1985-1988 Pontiac Fieros have a 9 engine code for the 2.8L L44 V6.

Missing Entry: The 2009 Corvette and 2011 Camaro SS use a W engine code for the 6.2L LS3 V8.

Missing Entry: Vin Code V for 2.4 L LE9 2.4L MFI I4

Warning: Issues with the decoding are related to year/model combinations. Such as the 4.1 V6 is not included in the list, however it was used on El Dorada and some Cadillac models. Each Year has different break down for each code, a complete list would be a subject of its own. Along with Plants and some model break downs over years.

Missing Entry: 1991 Limo with engine code 7, is not listed. According to one source the limo engine is a 5.7L.

Check Digit[edit | edit source]

The check digit is used to validate a VIN so that computer systems can immediately calculate whether the VIN is valid. The digit is calculated by removing all the letters from the VIN and substituting them with their numeric counterpart. After the substitution, the numbers are multiplied against a weight factor table. The remaining 16 numbers are added together and divided by 11. The remainder of that calculation becomes the checksum, and if the remainder is 10 then the check digit is "X".

Land Rover/VIN Codes

From 1948 to the early eighties, Land Rover used for their cars chassis numbers of their own format. These formats are described in the table below. Since 1980 Land Rover deploys the standard 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), complying with international standards.

Car details can be derived (decoded, calculated) from the chassis numbers and the VIN. Typically, the model (Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Freelander), model type (station wagon, three/four door, etc), wheel base (90 inch, 100 inch, 110 inch, etc), engine, LHD/RHD, gearbox, and model year is included in the VIN.

Volvo/VIN Codes

Volvo Cars uses the following [[1]] codes and formats:

These VIN number decoding and designation is used primarily only for the North American Market. European and other Asian markets use another nomenclature systems.

Volvo Car Corporation is a registered Swedish based company that was headed by parent group FoMoCo PAG until 2010 when Ford Motor Company sold it to Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. The Volvo Car Corp still has concerns with its past parent AB Volvo when it comes to vehicle safety systems, crash testing, engines, ocean races, and some parts.

Volvo Car Corp uses World Manufacturer Identifiers beginning with YV and 4V.

Volvo VIN History and Updates[edit | edit source]

The Volvo Cars group started using a standard VIN pattern in 1975 on the 164 and 240 series vehicles. Since the VIN specification had not been defined yet, the codes are a somewhat different configuration than modern VIN codes yet still contain much of the same information. The most distinguishable features are the 2 character manufacturer identifier "VC" and 15 character length.

In 1981 Volvo changed the VIN pattern in accordance with the ISO Standard 3779 for vehicle VIN numbers. Volvo cars sold in North America from 1981 to 1991 had a VIN pattern that is slightly different than Volvo cars produced after 1991. The most significant changes in the post 1991 VIN were the 5th and 8th position characters. The 5th character was changed from representing the safety equipment to represent the body style and safety equipment. This also helped ease the integration of front wheel drive configurations (850 series) into the existing VIN pattern. It seems likely that the old (81-91) position 8 character was combined with the position 5 codes in 1992 which resulted in new codes in the 5th character position. This left the 8th character position open to represent the engine emission control setup.

With the discontinuation of the rear wheel drive models, Ford aquisition, and new series designations (C, S and V series and later XC) in 1999, Volvo VIN patterns changed again. The main change came again to the 5th character representing body style and safety equipment. After 1998 the 5th character changed to represent the vehicle platform. While the information being represented by the character position was somewhat backwards compatible with the codes used prior to 1999, it should be considered representational of a different data set. After 1999 the 4th character should also be considered representational of a new data set for vehicle code to with the change of series designations.

In 2008 the U.S. National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration decided to change the structure of the VIN pattern. For modelyear 2010 and forward all cars with marketcode 31 and 39 (USA and Canada) position 4-5 change places with position 6-8 (i.e. 12345678 becomes 12367845).
