[edit] About Engineering
Engineering is a discipline focused around the analysis of existing systems, and the synthesis of new systems. The process of analyzing an existing system is called modeling, and the process of producing a new system is called design. Engineering design typically involves the minimization of cost and the maximization of functionality with respect to various trade-offs. Because engineering is concerned with actual systems, it is referred to as "applied science", in contrast to the more theoretical sciences of mathematics and physics.

- Civil
- Civil engineers are concerned with a wide range of topics, including buildings, bridges, roads, irrigation systems, and other physical structures. Civil engineering is one of the oldest forms of engineering, and people frequently use the generic term "Engineer" to describe civil engineers.
- Mechanical
- Mechanical engineers are concerned primarily with the design and manipulation of mechanical machines. These machines can be as simple as levers and wedges, or as complicated as internal combustion engines, planes, and spacecraft.
- Electrical
- Electrical Engineering is a discipline that covers electric components, circuits, electric signals, and automatic electric control systems. Electrical engineers built the first transistors and computers, so many electrical engineers deal with computer topics as well.
- Chemical
- Chemical engineers use applied chemistry to solve real-world problems. Chemical engineers apply old compounds to new problems, they discover new chemicals, and they develop plants, refineries, tools, and methodologies for working with chemicals.
- Biomedical
- Biomedical engineering is a branch of engineering that uses applied science to solve medical problems. It is frequently considered to be a subdiscipline of chemical engineering (and occasionally even electrical engineering), but has enough original thought to be considered a basic discipline.
[edit] Subdisciplines
- Aeronautical
- Aeronautical engineering is a subset of mechanical engineering that deals specifically with planes and aircraft. Occasionally, Aeronautical engineering is combined with Astronautical engineering into a single discipline called "Aerospace Engineering".
- Architectural
- Architectural engineering is a subdiscipline of Civil engineering that combines architectural design with civil engineering methodologies. Architectural engineering is very similar to structural engineering, except there is a higher emphasis on design and aesthetics.
- Astronautical
- Astronautical engineering is a subset of mechanical engineering that is specifically concerned with space craft and space travel. Occasionally, Astronautical engineering is combined with aeronautical engineering, and is called "Aerospace Engineering".
- Automotive
- Automotive engineering is a field of mechanical engineering that deals primarily with automobiles and internal combustion engines.
- Communication
- Communication engineering is a subset of electrical engineering that deals specifically with electrical communication systems and communication networks.
- Computer
- Computer engineering is a subset of electrical engineering that deals with specifically with computer hardware, and low-level computer software.
- Electronic
- "Electrical engineering" and "electronics engineering" are terms that are frequently used interchangeably. However, in some locations, the term "electronics engineering" is used to describe a field of applied technology, while electrical engineering always refers to the field of applied science.
- Environmental
- Environmental engineering is a field of civil engineering that deals specifically with environmental and conservation aspects. Environmental engineers work with air, water, noise and soil pollution abatement technology, environmental monitoring, waste treatment, irrigation systems, rivers, watersheds, and pollution clean-up operations.
- Geospatial
- Geospatial engineering is a branch of civil engineering that deals with geographic topics, and natural structures.
- Nanoengineering
- Nanoengineering is a subdiscipline of Electrical, Mechanical, and Chemical engineering disciplines. Nanoengineering deals with nanoscopic machines, MEMS, NEMS, et cetera.
- Naval
- Naval engineering, often called naval architecture, refers to the design, construction and repair of marine vessels.
- Nuclear
- Nuclear engineering is a subset of Mechanical and Chemical engineering that deals with the creation of nuclear-powered facilities, and the harnessing of nuclear power.
- Petroleum
- Petroleum engineering is a subset of mechanical and chemical engineering that that focuses primarily on the locating and extracting of underground petroleum reserves, and the conversion of crude oil into refined products.
- Structural
- Structural engineering is a subset of civil engineering that deals with the creation and analysis of physical structures such as buildings or bridges.
