Description

Creepers spawn in low light levels.

Part of what makes creepers so dangerous is the fact that if you get too close, they explode and deal enough damage to kill you if you stand right next to it - even if you're wearing a full set of diamond armor. This danger is amplified in that such an explosion can damage defensive structures, leaving a base vulnerable to attack by other monsters.

Strategies

One way to kill a creeper is to run right at it at full speed and hit it, then either run backwards or (if the creeper is at least 5 blocks away from you), stay where you are for a second. If successful, it won't be able to prime itself to explode for another second, enough time to get in and attack again.

If you don't care about leaving a gaping hole in the ground and don't want its gunpowder, just use a flint-and-steel on it and run! If you use flint-and-steel on a Creeper, it won't stop itself from exploding.

This method can be used when raiding an enemy's base, in PVP, or in combat against other mobs. However, it can be hard to get right, as the creeper may not actually explode where you want it to, since it will try to chase you as you run from it.

It’s also possible to kill a creeper from far away using a bow and arrow if you aim properly. Using this method, there’s no risk of the creeper exploding.

Charged Creepers

If a creeper gets struck by lightning, it becomes "charged", and its explosions become even more powerful! You will know a creeper is charged just by looking at it: charged creepers surge with electricity. If a charged creeper kills certain mobs, that mob rops its head as an item.

Charged creepers are super rare, but an easy way to get one is to enchant a trident with channeling and wait for a thunderstorm. When one comes, search for a creeper and throw the trident at it. As long as there is exposed sky, a lightningbolt will strike the creeper and turn it into a charged creeper. Now lead it to a zombie, skeleton or another creeper and use flint-and-steel on your charged creeper and run!

History

Creepers were invented when Minecraft's original developer, Notch, tried to make pigs, but got the height and width muddled up. So he decided to slap some gunpowder on it, give it a green texture and call it a "creeper".
