Family Cyperaceae (cont'd)

Subfamily Cyperoideae (cont'd)

Tribe Cariceae

Carex
The genus Carex is represented by more than 200 species in New York. Of these, all but about a dozen species are native to New York State.[1] Of the non-native taxa, the two species of Asiatic sand sedge, included here in Carex sect. Macrocephalae, are considered to be potentially invasive.[2] Only one of these, Carex kobomugi, has been reported in New York (a single population in 2013), but both have been reported in nearby states.

Here, the genus is organized by sections, using the modified version of Kenneth Kent Mackenzie’s system used in the Flora of North America.[3]

Although neither of these Carex sect. Macrocephalae species are listed as naturalized in New York, Carex kobomugi was found in the Great Kills and Miller Field areas of Gateway National Recreation Area on Staten Island on Oct. 31, 2013.[1] Carex macrocephala has been reported on the coastal dunes of New Jersey, where Carex kobomugi is already common.[2] Carex kobomugi has also been found on sandy beaches in Rhode Island and in Massachusetts, where it has been listed as prohibited.[3]
