Yam porridge, popularly known as asaro, is a delicious Nigerian dish made from yam. Among the Yoruba people, it is popularly consumed with a pepper mixture. The dish can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner. It is also a party favorite.
Ingredient[edit | edit source]
- Yam, peeled and diced to the size of sugar cubes
- Fresh peppers
- Fresh tomatoes
- Onions
- Ground crayfish
- Palm oil
- Groundnut oil
- Salt
- Seasoning cube
- Ground pepper
- Cooked meat or fish (optional)
Procedure[edit | edit source]
- Rinse the diced yam, and transfer to a clean pot.
- Blend your fresh pepper, tomatoes, onions, and crayfish into a smooth paste. Add the paste to the pot with the yams.
- Add some palm oil and a small amount of groundnut oil. Season with salt and seasoning cube to taste.
- Cook the yam on medium-high heat until soft.
- Use a wooden spoon to stir the yam over low heat until the entire mixture has thickened.
- Add the cooked meat or fish if using.
- Serve.
