To preserve edit histories and observe the attribution requirements of the licenses, content from our sister projects should be imported rather than simply pasted into a new module. Wikibooks administrators can import pages from: English Wikipedia, Wikiversity, Wikisource, Wikinews, and Simple English Wikibooks.

Requests to import can be made to help in making or expanding a book, and to move works from other projects that fit Wikibooks' scope. Place requests below and an administrator will try to perform the import promptly.

Note that administrators are not responsible for moving and cleaning up pages. Please watch this page for when the import is complete and take care of the imported module.

Administrators: To import a page, go to Special:import. After import, add {{dewikify}} to the page and make a note where the imported page has ended up. Pages will by default import into Transwiki:Pages name.

Pages with extremely long edit histories may fail to import. In this case, a single revision which gives attribution to the source wiki will be imported. While this isn't ideal, it should satisfy the GFDL. Place {{import failed|Page name}} on the talk page to note this. Note that repeated attempts to import may eventually bring over the history, so if it fails on the first attempt, you might want to try it a few more times.

Please see bugzilla:15000 (and vote for it to get it resolved sooner).

[edit] Simple Imports

Use this section for simple imports that you are willing to wait for before working on the module.

[edit] Import and Merge

Use this section for imports that need to be "history-merged" with a module that has already been started using copy-paste.

Yes check.svg Done, but none of the history came across. History will show that the article was imported from WP though. --Jomegat (talk) 12:48, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
  • w:Guru_angadSikhism/Sri_Guru_Angad_Dev_Ji The book on Sikhism is in outline form and I believe this article would be ideal for the module on the second Guru of Sikhism. The article cites one reference and uses a narrative style for the biographical details. Thanks --Sluffs (talk) 10:29, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Wikibook on Hinduism:

I've created modules using WP articles on Hinduism with a straight-forward copy and paste approach. I've only just found out that the importation of articles needs to be requested and is the task of administrators. Does this mean that I have to delete the pages I've already imported and then make a request or can the pages be amended. Many of the WP articles on Hinduism were written by devotees and therefore they tend not to be "encyclopaedic" in style but others are. Any advice? Thanks --Sluffs (talk) 12:52, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

You'll want to create a list of the Wikipedia articles used as sources and the pages you pasted them into. Then we can import them and merge the histories with what you currently have, no deletion needed. -- Adrignola talk contribs 12:46, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
I've done extensive editing which includes deleting a technical etymology section, removal of repetition, grammar and lots of other tweaks to improve the flow of the prose. If you import the original WP articles won't that mean that all the changes are reverted. On the page about Hindu religious symbols; I've merged three articles with extensive removal of the each articles original material. This was done because the majority of the articles seem to have been written by Hindus and I wanted the concepts of Hinduism to be easily understood by people with no in-depth knowledge of India's religions. Basically I was editing with no knowledge of Hinduism myself and the end result was that the book started to take on the form of a primer with no advanced analysis or technical disputes about the material included. I'll create a list of the WP sources and WB pages (will place them here within a day of so) and keep a copy of the book with my edits as they stand today. Maybe after the import, I can paste my edited version in.

Thanks. --Sluffs (talk) 01:19, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes and no. When we do the import, your edits will no longer be the current version. However, it's pretty simple to bring up the previous version, edit, and save. Voila. The history is merged, and your edits are intact. However, we still need a list of articles. --Jomegat (talk) 01:30, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Here's the list

Thanks. --Sluffs (talk) 10:43, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

OK. Where were they pasted? We need to know that too so we can do the merge(s). --Jomegat (talk) 11:09, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Import infobox template from wikipedia

hello oh masters of the universe. i'd be eternally greatful if you could make the infobox feature available in wikibooks. i am including bios of significant people in my textbook and the infobox structure would do me fine for that. otherwise i'd have to author my own templates which are likely to soak up time and are not going to be as good as the infobox is already. thanks and all the best, Robert Huber (talk) 13:49, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

There are lots of infobox templates on WP. The one you mentioned in the reading room is {{Infobox_Scientist}}, so I'll import that one for you. Unusual? Quite TalkQu 16:26, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
FYI: Wikibooks has its own {{infobox}} "feature" available that is used somewhat differently from infoboxes on Wikipedia. --darklama 16:32, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Ah yes, spotted that after I started importing stuff... however, using the existing WB template as a transclusion to the Infobox Scientist one from WP, plus its transcluded templates, seems to work okay.... If anyone thinks this should be done differently, feel free! Unusual? Quite TalkQu 17:48, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] w:Writing Group and others

This Wikipedia article was nominated for deletion - see w:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Writing Group - with the closing consensus being to transwiki it to Wikibooks. I've placed it in w:Category:Copy to WikiBooks but that seems to be cluttered with articles that have been tagged for years. I'm not at all familiar with WikiBooks, but got pointed here from Wikipedia. Thryduulf (talk) 23:34, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done—find it at Transwiki:Writing Group. I'll see about the others and get back to you. -- Adrignola talk contribs 01:54, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I imported a few recipes in that category. The others could be imported, but someone would have to merge them into an existing book or create a new one with them. They've sat in there for years because Wikibooks can't make use of them in their existing condition and people haven't wanted to import them unless someone's expressed a desire to integrate them. They'd end up sitting in Category:Transwikis needing a home for a few years in all probability. -- Adrignola talk contribs 02:38, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
