[edit] Video upload formats
I have read information that one can add a link to videos to the wikibook pages but I don't see the appropriate video file extensions that are allowed to use as I only see the appropriate image file extensions to use. Can you help me out on this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Respectyoda (talk • contribs) 04:46, November 14, 2007.

[edit] Wording to create a new page
When you [go] to create a new book(or page), an info box comes at the top. Is this a template (something I can view the code for), or it something admin only type of hard coded thing? ChessCreator (talk) 00:50, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, answered my own question. It's here MediaWiki:Newarticletext
- Both. That template at the top of the page is only a default, you can actually do a lot of modifications. When you go to create a new page, you can (if your wiki-foo is strong):
- Edit the template at the top to display a specific message for a new page
- Edit the template at the top to display a different message if the page already exists ("I already exist, check before saving!")
- Preload the edit box with custom text.
- Check out some of the work that I've done on my book creator page. It's as close to automation as we can get around here without having to use javascript. If you think something like this could be adapted for your use on the chess books, let me know and I can try to set something up for you. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 01:08, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
- That gadget looks impressive, but I'm wonder how it would ever be used.
- Is it possible that you can say apply gadget if the URL for creation is in the Opening_theory_in_chess section? If not I can't see how the tool will get used. ChessCreator (talk) 14:10, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Autoconfirmed user
Kindly help me as I wanted to post some pictures for my wikibook page. What would be the procedure for it?
- You aren't able to upload images until your account is 4 days old. Until then, please read our media policy, so you know what you're doing when the 4 days is up. If your images are freely licensed, you can upload them to Commons (where you do not have to wait to upload). If you need other help, come on back. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 17:02, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Usurpation request: Duesentrieb <- Gearloose
I would like to take over the account User:Duesentrieb (no edits); I am Duesentrieb on several projects, including de:wp (admin), commons (admin), mediawiki (admin), meta and since my successful usurpation on en:wp too. I would like to be able to use that name everywhere with upcomming SUL.
I'm not here often, please notify me on meta about whatever you decide to do, or whatever I need to do. -- Gearloose (talk) 21:17, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Username change

[edit] Import vs. rename bug
I ran into this last night, and not sure what to do about it. Turns out that if an account has edits here (through the magic of import), the username can't be registered! The account came up on listusers, but had no account creation log.
My seat of the pants solution was to move "User:Username" to "User:Username (wikipedia edits)". I then blocked the wikipedia edits account. We might want a template for the userpage or something as well ("this user is a transwiki ghost of..."?), but at least we should try to do the same thing for each case. --SB_Johnny | PA! 10:38, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps crats should be permitted to override the software with Extension:User Merge
and Delete. Even so, this is a problem, so I'll make a report at bugzilla for you. I think the desired behaviour here is that the user is uncreateable (to avoid users registering an account that already has edits, which could attribute those edits to someone who didn't make them) but that this is possible to override. Alternatively, all imported history might use the User@xxproject format for attribution (which is not a username that can be created), but I seriously doubt that'd be possible retroactively. Realistically, I think the ability to override the software is necessary here (similarly with renaming someone to an account which has been merged - though there is now a method to do this is a slightly more roundabout way). – Mike.lifeguard | talk 12:49, 20 April 2008 (UTC) - Actually, it seems you can create the account, which is (IMO) a bug, as it allows the imported edits to be attributed to anyone who registers the account. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 13:41, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
I like the idea of using User@xxproject for the short run. With SUL just around the corner, whenever they fix the outstanding problems though, the entire issue of someone being able to hijack contributions will become moot. --darklama 14:49, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- For reference: bugzilla:13798
- I meant that when edits are imported, they should be attributed to User@xxproject - not that we rename the ghost accounts to that (as there may be more than one project which has edits of that user imported, and we can't split it into more than one user; also, there are many many users with only imported contribs, and we can't rename them all) – Mike.lifeguard | talk 14:52, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Vandalism
Radiation_Oncology/Lung/SCLC/Limited_Stage page was just vandalized from IP 131.123.184.49 I am reverting this one, but there may be more to come. Tdvorak (talk) 17:49, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Rename request
Hi, sorry to bother with this, but could any bureaucrat rename my account from Jota to Jorge Morais? It is the name I use in other projects now (in fact, my real name). It is also for the SUL. - Jota (talk) 14:04, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, it's been almost a month. Should I make the request somewere else? Is anything else needed? Or should I ask directly to a bureaucrat? - Jota (talk) 15:30, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Usurpation request: Kaustubh <- Kausshas3

[edit] wikibook usage
I'm the primary contributor to the Introduction to Sociology Wikibook. I request that people who adopt the book make note of that, but I'm not sure if everyone does. Is there anyway to find out how many views the wikibook gets? --Rcragun (talk) 18:29, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- I believe the hit counter is down at the moment. As for attribution, you should be attributed in accord with the GFDL. You can create an authors page for the book if you like, to recognize certain authors who add their name there. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 23:32, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Usurpation request: Yuyu_temp --> Yuyu

[edit] Usurpation request Bryan

[edit] Username usurpation
Hi. I'm a sysop on ru:wiki and ru:wikiquote. I would like to have the User:Solon account usurped for SUL purposes. May I ask to rename this account to free username "Solon" for me? I found out this user have no edits or log entries (see Special:Contributions/Solon). Thanks. 89.163.42.109 (talk) 19:40, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry for my impatience. There are any difficulties? 89.163.42.109 (talk) 08:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Unless I'm going crazy, that username is available so you should be able to just sign up with it and not have to usurp. I at least didn't see any contributions, if the user exists but theres no contribs we'll need you to make edits on the pages you linked to confirming your request (and signing with your actual username, not an anon). Post the diffs here. Regards, Mattb112885 (talk to me) 23:01, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comment, Mattb112885. I know nothing about your mental health, but if you take a look at this page, your doubts can be resolved. This user really exists here and has no edits. It's not mine and I'm not able to login with this username, of course. Because I don't know it's password.
- I'm sorry. Maybe I don't understand you well. What kind of diff you want from me? What information I need confirm? I haven't account here. User Solon at en-wikibooks is not mine account, as I say before. But it's my regular username in many other Wikimedia Foundation projects (e.g. Russian Wikipedia where I have sysop access, Russian Wikiquote where I'm Bureaucrat, meta-Wiki and a lot of others.) And I simply ask to this unused account be renamed to free this username to it can be joined to my SUL account.
- And would be great for me to hear Bureaucrat's opinion on this subject after all. 89.163.42.109 (talk) 17:34, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry I was wrong about the username here. I don't think there will be a problem with doing the SUL, but to start the process you will need to log in to your Russian Wikipedia account (I think that should be sufficient since you're an admin there) and write a message on your talk page that says something to the effect of "yes I am really requesting SUL for this account", and link to the diff here. That's just necessary to prove your identity. A bureaucrat can take it from there. Regards, Mattb112885 (talk to me) 23:11, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Australian On-Line Catalogue
Hi I am in the throws of completing an Australian On-line catalogue, your site was posted to the All Nations Stamp Club, so I found your site interesting, can the catalogue I have created be loaded (created in Microsoft FrontPage) be loaded direct to your site? I can be contacted at lasaboy@tpg.com.au Larry Bailey aka lasabailey Manager AAA Australian Stamps
- No, we use a markup language specific to MediaWiki. You can see the help files at Meta. The content would need to be suitable for Wikibooks too - I can't tell from your description whether that's the case. Perhaps a more detailed description should come before worrying about the technical challenge of getting the content on Wikibooks. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 23:30, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rename user
I'm an sysop and in buracrat in pt.wikiquote.org
In view the login provided by the unified META [1], ask the reaname of User:Chico, currently without any contribution in the project. The rename may be something like User:Chico-Old. Thank advance.

[edit] Usurpation request: User:Philosopher <- User:Philosopher2
I would like to take over the account User:Philosopher (2 edits – not GFDL-significant); I am Philosopher on several projects, including the English Wikipedia (admin) and Meta. I would like to be able to use that name everywhere with the SUL. Thanks, Philosopher2 (talk) 19:26, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- To start this process, please make an edit at your Wikipedia talk page with a comment requesting usurpation here. Thanks. -withinfocus 00:32, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Autoconfirmed user and Modern Greek
I am a newcomer to wikibooks. I am interested in studying Modern Greek and other languages. I started my lessons and got blocked when I tried to listen to the pronunciation of Greek phrases. By clicking the <listen> button I do not seem to get anywhere. In the first attempts I got a message that I should be and Autoconfirmed user to be able to make downloads and play the sound file.
I tried to find out how I could become an Autoconfirmed user... By reading a comment somewhere I got the impression that I should wait for 4 days and all doors would be opened. To no avail.
Now, when I click the <listen> button I am referred to a page that relates to uploading files.
Can someone help me on this, please?
Silvio (talk) 15:59, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- What page are you looking at, what link? I wasn't aware that a user needed to be autoconfirmed in order to download files or listen to audio. What page did you get directed to? --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 16:39, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- No, you don't need autoconfirmed to listen to media. You should be able to press the play button and listed to the file without downloading it. I'm not sure why you're being redirected like that - a link to the page would be helpful. Some broswers choke on the Cortado player which handles our audio and video, but that doesn't sound like the problem you're having. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 16:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- Modern_Greek/A1/Lesson_1 maybe? Perhaps the above person is trying to upload, all the audio's are red links, missing, it might be a good idea to remove the red links if that is the problem. SunCreator (talk) 01:55, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- Ahh, yes. Redlinked media will take you to the upload page, which requires autoconfirmed. I'll remove them. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 10:33, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
