Most of the institutionalized education does not as yet cover video game design as a field. There have recently been several steps in that direction especially due to Universities forming partnerships with the game industry, and because students were not captivated by the standard offerings.

A video game design course can have a diverse curriculum like Game Writing, Art for Games, Game Audio Design, Ethics and Games.

The field of research into video game design can cover various topics like optimizing human interfaces for disabled people, recuperation of military personnel from trauma, reducing phobias, promoting literacy, etc.
