Ceto is the daughter of Gaia and Pontus, and is also the sister of Phorcys. Ceto is said to be the mother of the Gorgons as well as several other monsters. She eventually married Phorcys, and was the goddess of sea monsters. Ceto's name came from the noun kētos, meaning sea monster. Ceto is depicted as a serpentine fish.
