Tundra biomes Artic Hares

Introduction!

Artic hares live in the harsh environment of the north American tundra biomes, it is very cold so they sometimes huddle together to share warmth. They are mammals and are also omnivores. Their average life span in the wild head to body is, 19 to 26 inches (including their ears). Their tale is 1 to 3 inches (3 to 8 cm). Their weight is 6 to 15 lbs (3 to 7 kg). They also have thick white fur in winter so they can survive freezing temperatures.

Artic hares do not hibernate, although they survive the dangerous cold with a number of behavioral and physical adaptions. They sport thick fur so they enjoy a low surface area to volume radio that conserves body heat, therefore they keep pretty warm,it is most evident in their shortened ears. Hares are slightly bigger than rabbits resulting in taller hind legs and longer ears, their longer legs make them go very fast with speeds up to 40 miles per hour (60 kilometers an hour).Their white coat (fur) helps them to camouflage in the ice and snow so that it helps them not to be killed by predators.

How they change through the year

In spring the artic hare's white coat changes to a blue-grey so that they can then camouflage in with the approximation of local rocks and vegetation, otherwise they are white. Artic hares can be found in groups of dozens, females give birth to 1 litter every year.
