ALL ABOUT ME:

==My name is Carissa Eckelman and I am a junior at Old Dominion University through Blue Ridge Community College. I am recently married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful son together named Jacob. While it is hard being a mom, wife, and student I am juggling it the best I can. In my spare time I love to hang out with my family, go out with my friends, watch movies and dance (although I'm not very good at it.) I graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 2005. I am studying Elementary Education prek-6 and hope to teach second or third grade. My mom is a second grade teacher and I have helped out with her for as long as I can remember, and I just love the age of the kids.
PHILOSOPHY My teaching philosophy right now is pretty simple. I want to teach students with a fun, learning atmosphere while learning everything they need to. I believe that students are excellent teachers themselves so I think that having them work in groups together for reading or math they will not only learn how to do it, but to help someone who maybe isn't as good as they are in that subject. I believe that all students have the capability to learn and I plan to help them become the best students that they can be. I don't think that because a child has a "label" on them, no matter what it is that they should be viewed at differently. They still want to learn, and I believe they should have the opportunity to do that. As Plato once said, "Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each."
