Xin Wen Jie Biao (Spicy Warm Release Exterior)

General Actions & Indications:

  • disperses Wind-Cold
  • usually little or no sweating
  • body ache
  • no thirst
  • floating & tight pulse
  • fever
  • chills
  • sinus congestion or runny nose
  • tongue that is light red in color
  • tongue with a thin white coating
  • some Spicy Warm herbs are also diuretic

General Contraindications:

  • Qi & Yin deficiency causing excessive sweating

General Caution:

  • Yin syndrome
  • Blood deficiency
  • chronic skin infection


  • Ma Huang (麻黄) - strongly disperses Wind-Cold, Wei (衞) level (protective/defensive level)
  • Gui Zhi (桂枝) - strongly disperses Wind-Cold, Nutritive level & Muscle layer
  • Xi Xin (细辛) - strongly disperses Wind-Cold in Shao Yin stage with fever and deep pulse


  • Zi Su Ye (紫苏叶) - average disperse Wind-Cold, special for Cold, Exterior Excess, turbidity
  • Jing Jie (荆芥) - average disperse Wind-Cold, special for any Wind (Heat or Cold)
  • Fang Feng (防风) - average disperse Wind-Cold, special deep aches & pains of Cold


  • Qiang Huo - release exterior, expel Wind-Damp, alleviate pain, Tai Yang headache, Upper Body Wind-Damp Bi pain
  • Gao Ben - release exterior, expel Wind-Damp, alleviate pain, Tai Yang headache
  • Bai Zhi - release exterior, expel Wind-Damp, alleviate pain, Yang Ming headache, toothache, nasal congestion


  • Sheng Jiang - Wind-Cold w/ turbidity in Stomach
  • Cong Bai (葱白)- unblocks Yang Qi superficially, if early
  • Xiang Ru - Summertime Cold-Damp, "Summertime Ma Huang"
  • Xin Yi Hua (辛夷花) - light, ascending, nasal problems
