Lesson 6.5: Days and Months[edit | edit source]

In this lesson we'll use the numbers that we've previously learnt, and we'll use them to express the date.

Days[edit | edit source]

Several of the days of the week have names related to numbers. Except for Σαββατο, Saturday, which is neuter, they are all feminine.

Vocab
The Days · Οι μέρες
Κυριακή (Lord's day) Sunday
Δευτέρα (Second day) Monday
Τρίτη (Third day) Tuesday
Τετάρτη (Fourth day) Wednesday
Πέμπτη (Fifth day) Thursday
Παρασκευή ("Preparation") Friday
Σάββατο ("Sabbath") Saturday

Months[edit | edit source]

Vocab
The Months · Οι μήνες
January Ιανουάριος / Γενάρης
February Φεβρουάριος / Φλεβάρης
March Μάρτιος / Μάρτης
April Απρίλιος / Απρίλης
May Μάιος / Μάης
June Ιούνιος / Ιούνης
July Ιούλιος / Ιούλης
August Αύγουστος
September Σεπτέμβριος / Σεπτέμβρης
October Οκτώβριος / Οκτώβρης
November Νοέμβριος / Νοέμβρης
December Δεκέμβριος / Δεκέμβρης

Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Vocab
η μέρα the day
η εβδομάδα the week
χτες or χθες yesterday
σήμερα today
αύριο tomorrow

Giving the day / date[edit | edit source]

Examples
Είναι Παρασκευή. It is Friday.
Σήμερα είναι Τετάρτη. Today is Wednesday.
Τι μέρα είναι; What day is it?
Είναι στις 16 Νοεμβρίου. It's on the 16th of November.

In the final example you'll see that the month is in the genitive, because it's the 16th OF November. For all the days of the months use στις + the number in the feminine (because it's the day, which is feminine plural). The first of the month is treated slightly differently, here use the ordinal number.

Examples
Είναι στις είκοσι μια Νοεμβρίου. It's the 21st of November
Την πρώτη Νοεμβρίου. The 1st of November
