A white object on a white object[edit | edit source]

In Old Masters paintings, a white plate is quite distinct from the tablecloth on which it rests. Obviously, the eye perceives very clear and distinct differences between the two. But what are they? Painting a white object resting on a white object is an extreme exercise to train your eye to see the myriad colors that reflect off white objects.
