History[edit | edit source]

Development[edit | edit source]

The SNK NeoStar was an unreleased console.[1]

The console was heavily featured in the November 1993 Official Neo Geo Newsletter.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Most of what is known of the console comes from the planning stages and early marketing. As such this console remains highly obscure.

Technology[edit | edit source]

The console was to use a RISC architecture 32-bit CPU clocked at roughly 14.5 megahertz.[2] The console was said to support polygonal graphics, as well as CD-i format.[2]

The system was to use both cartridges and CD-ROM disks, as well as memory cards.[3] These memory cards were different then prior Neo-Geo memory cards, and were said to be based on hard disk drive technology, enabling a 20 times increase of capacity over older Neo Geo memory cards.[2]

The Neo Star output resolution was supposed to go as high as 640x480.[2] The system would have supported surround sound output.[2]

The system sported 4 joystick ports, as well as support for wireless controllers over infrared communication.[2]

Add-ons planned included a keyboard, "Cable TV/Modem" for online multiplayer and connectivity, and 3D goggles.[2] Online banking was a notable non-game use case for the console's online features.[2]
