History[edit | edit source]

Development[edit | edit source]

The system was previewed as the "PlayStation Q", using the same concept of streaming PlayStation 5 games as the PlayStation Portal would launch with.[1]

Launch[edit | edit source]

The launch price of the system was announced as $199.99 USD.[2] The device was seen by some as a successor of sorts to the PS Vita, albeit with a different purpose.[3] Another point of comparison made was to the Wii U gamepad.[4]

On August 31, 2023, preorders for the system were opened, with a projected release date of November 15, 2023.[5][6] Preorders were limited to one device per person.[7]

Around December 21, 2023, the PlayStation Portal had sold out at GameStop in the United States of America according to Tom's Guide.[8]Stock levels also impacted availability in the United Kingdom, with IGN reporting low stocks in early December 2023.[9]

Technology[edit | edit source]

Compute[edit | edit source]

The local processing is handled by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662.[10] The actual running of games is left to a networked PlayStation 5 game console.

Display[edit | edit source]

A LCD measuring 8 inches (20 cm) and operating at 60 Hz is used as the display of the device.[3] The screen was touch sensitive.[11]

Audio[edit | edit source]

The system included a 3.5mm headphone jack, twin speakers and a microphone, though notably it lacked Bluetooth audio support locking in users to Sony's own wireless audio products.[12][13][14]

Wireless[edit | edit source]

The system was supported Wi-Fi 5, with reviewers commonly noting a desire for more advanced Wi-Fi technology in the console given it's dependence on a strong signal for functionality.[15][16] Notably, the system included an Airplane mode, though this was noted by The Verge as rendering the system moot.[15]

Hardware[edit | edit source]

The system weighed 1.17 pounds (0.53 kg).[17] The system includes an integrated 16.6 Watt hour battery.[10]

iFixit and The Verge reported that much of the controller controller was notably easier to repair then a stock DualSense controller.[18]

Games[edit | edit source]
