Charales are freshwater green algae in kingdom Plantae, division Charophyta, class Charophyceae.

Family Characeae[edit | edit source]

Characeae is currently the only family in order Charales. It contains the genera Chara, Lamprothamnium, Lychnothamnus, Nitella, Nitellopsis, and Tolypella.

Starry stonewort (Nitellopsis obtusa) is a freshwater marine species, native to Eurasia, and listed as very highly invasive in New York State.
