Charales are freshwater green algae in kingdom Plantae, division Charophyta, class Charophyceae.

Family Characeae

Characeae is currently the only family in order Charales. It contains the genera Chara, Lamprothamnium, Lychnothamnus, Nitella, Nitellopsis, and Tolypella.

Nitellopsis

Nitellopsis obtusa Starry stonewort (Nitellopsis obtusa) is a freshwater marine species, native to Eurasia, and listed as very highly invasive in New York State.
