Materials[edit | edit source]

When making a map, I set out the following instruments:

  • a hard pencil
  • a very good eraser
  • several sheets of white paper
  • a good ruler, with gradations of at least 1mm (1/16")
  • a compass (the type for drawing circles)
  • some way of adding colour

Workspace[edit | edit source]

I try to have a large level table, or a drafting board, with a table close by, and a comfortable chair. Make sure that the work surface is clean and free of unnecessary clutter. This will ensure that you have plenty of room to work with the maps that you are making, and still have room to put them down for a minute, if you are working on multiple maps at once.
