So, what is different in these other scales?[edit | edit source]

Except that the pianos will have different layouts for their keys, there will be certain differences:

  • intervals can sound sweeter or harsher, depending on the characteristics of the scale
  • intervals can be perfectly tuned, or only approximately in tune
  • there can be more or less available chords
  • transposing and modulation can become more or less difficult
  • and of course, different scales lend themselves to different purposes
  • instruments will be slightly different

However, there also is an opposite effect:

  • the available instruments will affect what kind of scales are probable to evolve
  • the kind of music will affect what kind of scales are probable to evolve
