Annotations[edit | edit source]

imperium     (Latin) empire; imperial government.[1] MacHugh is contrasting a spiritual empire with a political one.

matinée     (French) A theatrical performance taking place in the afternoon. Lenehan, as usual, cannot resist using a French term, though matinée is now a naturalized English word.
