Only cos I'm nosy!

Why were your blocking yourself for fun?!! Cheers (& I'll do some today if other rumblings don't catch me) --Herby talk thyme 08:36, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kinda guessed it after trying to catch up on the happenings. I've just been looking over the Panic pages. Other than it is a mess that needs fixing I haven't got a lot further. Good to have some sane folk around tho at this time of the day even if one is an Aussie (just hope he is checking Rc!!). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:45, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Speaking of RC - feel free to give me a view on the admin notice board one - cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:47, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Apologies - get used to seeing you at "my" time!!--Herby talk thyme 08:54, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sharp eyes - cheers and catch you when I wake up!!! --Herby talk thyme 21:31, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ooh goody!

Having just seen your new pages!!! I'll do what I can when I can --Herby talk thyme 10:40, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK that makes it easy to keep track of - I'll watch that page as well and mark it when I do some. The effeort is appreciated tho I'm not at all sure how many others know what we are doing <g> --Herby talk thyme 11:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Game guides

I'm going to seek some clarification of these today. I noticed yesterday some Final Fantasy have been "transwiki'd according to policy" and some are still being worked on!!! --Herby talk thyme 10:02, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

Thanks a lot for the kind welcome. Have a nice week and god bless. --Sir James Paul 22:43, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Last two mumfums

FWIW nothing interesting on either - although it surprised me - cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:50, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Whilst the vandalism of the last few minutes seems to be related to mumfum we can't be sure. I gave the user a 1 week block in good faith. I don't think you should extend bans given by other admins but I guess Wiki encourages users to be bold so there's not much I can do. Xania talk 00:47, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry about it. It was late at night so I'd probably had a few too many and that vandal pissed me off as I kept trying to move back the pages to the wrong places. You made the right decision. Xania talk 11:42, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Alfie - nothing to report - regards --Herby talk thyme 08:12, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome! That was pretty fast. -- Kesh 01:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

That one!

Used twice now - ip blocked for a month, no legit edits. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:56, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good to have support around, I wasn't sure if you were tidying up or blocking but to take on us two in particular seems a little unwise - peace to the others but we are THE vandal fighters <g>. BTW if you spot one of my "checkuser" type blocks feel free to question - within policy I'll answer what I can (or offline) All the best --Herby talk thyme 09:07, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hum missed picking up that "main page" one - thanks. Got a view on this [1]? Google shows up nothing at all? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:19, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - created by three diff IPs tho. I think I'll "watch" it for a bit. Good night I guess! --Herby talk thyme 09:36, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

qr-em

Info really - looks like it was not working properly in December maybe. I found some of mine from then that had not showed in any category. As you also use edit summaries I was able to clear those you had placed too (I think). However you might find some around still and I've no idea about those placed by others who don't use summaries. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:26, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template:Editprotected

Are you going to import or copy the page history from Wikipedia for that template? User:Iamunknown 22:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I usually add the history on the talk page, thanks for the reminder tho. --Az1568 (Talk) 22:05, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

On an unrelated note, thanks for the welcomes at meta and the swahili wikipedia. :-D How many recent changes are you watching? User:Iamunknown 22:25, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome for the welcome :P - Well.. I watch about 183 different wikis (see m:SWMT/List) and I have a bunch of user accounts (it might take a long time to load). So you can pretty much find me on any Wikimedia wiki.--Az1568 (Talk) 22:39, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've already used {{Editprotected}} :-D User:Iamunknown 01:27, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

How's this User:Az1568/Sandbox? --Az1568 (Talk) 01:50, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
The current location of the "edit" link is somewhat confusing. Why I originally suggested it be moved is because I thought it was referring to editing only the line of "Other projects." Would having it on a new line (aligned to the right side) be appropriate? User:Iamunknown 01:56, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Idle curiosity

I meant to ask at the time but care to share what happened when you deleted and selectively restored a while back? OK I could test it myself but I am quite happy to learn from others! Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:11, 17 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

So pretty good sub for oversight in a way - just more work I guess. I found a thread on meta that implied oversight was often called for when admins did not selectively restore. To the Admin noticeboard talk at least in due course & I will give it a try I think. Thanks for the info (& I'll change the .js, thanks) --Herby talk thyme 13:10, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Open proxies

expiry time of indefinite nocreate Isn't the math problem at sign-up a good enough deterrent for spam and vandal bots? I am worried that by banning account creation we are shutting the third world out. --User:Iamunknown 04:02, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well.. It's an official Wikimedia policy (see WM:NOP) and the mailing list links at the bottom.) So there I don't think there's much that can be done about it. : ( --Az1568 (Talk) 04:33, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Erm, please help me out. I just read the policy, but I didn't see anything about banning account creation. Is that text elsewhere?
Also, thanks for posting here. (I saw your edit on my talk page and the un-edit.) Just so ya know, the one reason I do it is because I like to have conversations in one place. I know some people don't do that, and others find it annoying, so thanks for doing it and still being nice to me. :-) User:Iamunknown 04:41, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ummm.. You're right, there is nothing on banning account creation. But for some reason that's how the sysops here have been blocking these IP's! : (
(See Herbythyme Derbeth SBJohnny Kernigh Cspurrier) I'll make sure to not block account creation on the next batch. I'm not sure how we will be able to change that for thousands of the already blocked IP's tho :( --Az1568 (Talk) 05:12, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Could a nifty bot be designed to block the remaining ones and unblock the account creation part of the existing ones? That'd be nifty. :-)
Another thing: maybe a few users could be temporarily given sysop status to help with all the blocking business. --User:Iamunknown 05:55, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your last block

OK - the one before last - too early! Poss Wow account with no valid edits at that IP - blocked for a couple of weeks - cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:59, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cross Wiki info

And don't say IRC (!!). The spam bot page I dealt with today showed up in at least three other wikis at the same time from the same IP. Any co-ordination that you know of (with your cross wiki experience)? Blocks were distinctly variable too - of the ones I notified - from 2 hours to indef!? Cheers (btw answer here will be fine, my talk is "dead" for now, restricting myself to vandals and cleaning...) --Herby talk thyme 13:03, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Same kind of thing - you nay find the "Norman" vandal elsewhere - they hit Wsource too - cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:20, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I also noticed that spambot on Internet Relay Chat (heh :P) And interwiki co-ordination? see Meta's SWMT which handles most of the spam monitoring on the WMF's smaller wikis. : ) --Az1568 (Talk) 05:51, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that - any point in me signing up if I am not on IRC - many of the wikis do not seem to have particularly active admins so nothing is going to get done all that quickly? Equally how come the spam bot wasn't reported on the linked page from SWMT (& maybe Norman too - doubt he only tried two wikis)? It would seem that "cross wiki vandal fighting admins" would be a worthwhile idea? Do you know why popus doesn't work properly on Wikiversity BTW --Herby talk thyme 09:49, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
1. You can still use the web based tools : ) 2. Actually things do get done somewhat quickly (most of the time) 3. We get lot's and lot's of spam bots/vandals every day! So most really don't care/don't know : ( but the SWMT tends to clean that up quickly. 4. I also noticed that last year... (Seems ok now tho) I think you should try it again. --Az1568 (Talk) 06:18, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question

You left a message for me saying that an image I had uploaded might be removed if no copyright information could be found. I'm the creator of the image in question, and I'm happy to put up the proper copyright statements (I'd put it in the public domain), but I'm not sure how. Any informaion you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Recentchanges sandbox has been recently changed ;)

Az, did you see my recent change to your recentchanges sandbox? When I originally requested a change to the header, that's kind of what I was envisioning. See what you think. --Iamunknown 20:40, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think before (if) the changes are committed, I'd like to convert the wiki->HTML table markup. I could do that later today or tomorrow. --Iamunknown 20:41, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Looks good. : ) When you want it added just leave a note here.--Az1568 (Talk) 03:03, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good ol' Tom

Thanks for the block and revert. We may need to block that IP permanently since the user has been coming back for many months, trying to bother me and several other users here. -withinfocus 02:52, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Backlog at Category:NowCommons

Az, thanks so much for clearing out that backlog! I noticed when I tagged one image, and when I refreshed, it was already deleted! I was taken by surprise. :) --Iamunknown 04:23, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome -- I was getting a bit tired of seeing all of those images in the NowCommons category anyways.--Az1568 (Talk) 04:28, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

(More chitchat) I'm sorry you have to deal with all the images I tag. :( I'd deal with them if I could. --Iamunknown 05:16, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Heh.. don't worry about it : ) That's why we have admins to delete stuff. BTW do you know anything about the images uploaded by John Burkitt? They were tagged with NLD but have a {{PD}} tag.--Az1568 (Talk) 05:22, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Last vandal

Interesting and not sure of the answer but because all contribs were deleted there is no checkuser info. May be worth some admin type thought - may be necessary to "leave" something - cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's pretty old though, I wouldn't worry too much about it. (you have new e-mail) --Az1568 (Talk) 08:31, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hey - it's early - I didn't look at the date <g> just the block log!! --Herby talk thyme 08:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's ok -- BTW thanks for the cascading protection info it's pretty useful. --Az1568 (Talk) 08:51, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • reset

I thought the cascade was interesting (folk seemed a bit dismissive but I guess it would not have been done if it wasn't useful). The idea of protecting non existent pages is good - I'll take a look at some here when I get a chance. Also looking at the bugzilla one and will probably vote (having finally created an account <g>). Away early next week for a few days but will mail you soon - cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vandals

Hum - as all contribs deleted no info - I'll take this to others I think - cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:48, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You know that they're all old accounts right?? --Az1568 (Talk) 17:51, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Bugger!! It was early again <g> --Herby talk thyme 17:57, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cross wiki spam issue

Take a look at the reverts I've made here [2]. If you see/have seen similar elsewhere is it worth a meta request for blacklisting - as there are only the two here as far as I know it would be premature based on this? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:49, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

It would be a bit premature to request blacklisting at this stage, but I'll keep a look out for more of that type of spamming. If it continues to reoccur though, I'd make a blacklisting request. --Az1568 (Talk) 07:14, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fine - thought you might see it more. Heads up really. Btw the "Brian" re block I completely agree with! --Herby talk thyme 07:59, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Another one - same place same content - IP address this time rather than user - heads up is all - cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:25, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Double Check me

Take a look at this edit: [3] I blocked this IP for 1 day because of this comment, but if you look at the contrib history, this user actually has had a few productive edits earlier today. I need a second opinion. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 01:23, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Transwiki

Hey, I saw you were active, so my apologies if you are busy. Anyways, there is a large list forming at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Old/Transwiki, which require transwikification by a Wikibooks user with a sysop access level.

Would it be at all possible for you to try and reduce this backlog in any way, shape or form? We'd much appreciate it over at enwiki, and I'm sure you'd like to have new content :) Cheers, 144.136.170.176 06:26, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I just imported a couple of pages right now and tagged some on enwiki that have already been transwikied. = ) --Az1568 (Talk) 07:54, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely not can he be unblocked. If anything this is going against the community consensus of being blocked until he complies. Please re-instate immediately as infinite or tell me to do so and I will. -withinfocus 03:04, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Issue resolved on his talk page. Thanks anyway. -withinfocus 03:29, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You got it & check the wp page for the IP - worth taking some action?? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:02, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Looks like it belongs to a school district. (Don't they have classwork to do? :P ) Anyways, if you are going to block the IP you should keep it short, since it's a shared address. --Az1568 (Talk) 08:20, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure - heads up as much as anything - longish blocks on wp tho & back btw! --Herby talk thyme 08:23, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Time to delete orfu images?

Az, do you think it's okay if I start deleting unused and orphaned fair use images? I just noticed that there are at least a few. --Iamunknown 20:58, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think I'm going to start. All these new admin tools are interesting, but I'm kind of afraid to use them. --Iamunknown 21:16, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure, there's a bit of a backlog there. And don't worry, you'll get used to the new tools eventually. =) --Az1568 (Talk) 00:46, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Talk sandbox!

What's with Uncle G's bot and the way it "resets" the talk sandbox? (or is it just me - but I see you've been there too). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:24, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's been adding the main sandbox template, which looks really messed up there.-- looks like it dosen't know about the special one for the talk page... yet. :/ --Az1568 (Talk) 07:33, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Snootboot.jpg

Please let me know what I should be doing with my uploaded images. You have them identified as copyright infringements. Perhaps I have identified them under the wrong catagory. Practically all the pics I have on here I have taken myself as you can see from the camera data attached to the pic. Thanks --Rob 12:36, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Problem fixed thanks..but I have another question

I noticed that the catagory listing that my module falls under is Motorbikes Probably the more appropriate term would be Motorcycles I'm not sure how important it is or what the implications might be. Also I have added a headline Motorcycles to the bookshelf at http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikibooks:Technology_bookshelf I'm not sure how to add the link to my book there. Should the catagory page and the bookshelf not be linked? thanks --Rob 02:07, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Checkuser Decline

I saw your decline on IRC before I went do bed. The WMF gives the possibility that exceptions to the new resolution can be made, and considering your performance as a vandal fighter, I think it's worth a shot to ask them if we can lift the age restriction for you. We have a number of other checkusers here who can "watch" you (I say that only as reassurance to the WMF, you certainly don't need to be watched), and there are several people here who will vouch for your quality as a vandal fighter. Also, you have a little myopia, that is that you tend to focus only on vandals, so i dont think you pose a risk for the privacy policy.

Let me talk to bastique about it, but if the WMF is willing to give an exception (which i certainly can't guarantee) would you consider un-declining the nomination? --Whiteknight (talk) 02:56, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

If they decide to make an exception, yes. And if not, most likely I'll re-run when I do meet that limit. = ) --Az1568 (Talk) 03:10, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. If i knew when you were going to be eligible, i would be the first to nominate you. --Whiteknight (talk) 12:58, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion

You may want to add this page to protected titles, just like you did with these pages. 128.2.152.133 01:58, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

FWIW

Your "new friend" - same as your old friend Ninten* - good catch - three month block on IP now --Herby talk thyme 09:36, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Usernameblacklist

I don't understand the point in most of your changes. (?i:) makes everything case insensitive, making (m|M), (O|o), etc. pointless. \b is a word boundary which, also allows for the exclusion of anything being there, making the purpose of something like (\bo|O) only include a word boundary for lowercase o, but not uppercase O. I'm not sure if thats your intention. The only thing that makes sense to me, would be the inclusion of "\b(?i:moderator)". Anyways thought I would ask why you did those specific changes, rather then just changing it myself, in case there is more to it then what I see. --darklama 01:35, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oops! I was adding some new ones from WP, and I didn't intend to change anything that was already there. Should have checked it before saving. :P Fixed now - Thanks.--Az1568 (Talk) 03:39, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cross wiki vandalism - two talk page messages to your suggestions, de nada! Thoughts welcome, tho I confess it makes me angry!? Btw guess you noticed Johnny the vandal (User:Hephaestos) at wikisource (blocked by Shanel) - any other signs? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:23, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hmm.. =( Yep, noticed Johnny and asked Shanel to block him, seems pretty quiet for now. --Az1568 (Talk) 08:18, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

IP block

I assume you found something about it! Blocked meta & Commons too! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:50, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

It looks like the same random number bot from 2006. They usually use the same proxies that the spambots use, so it's best to block them on sight. --Az1568 (Talk) 01:30, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

IP block

More looked worthwhile I think - hope you don't mind & that all is good - cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:37, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, sounds good based on the rbl. = ) --Az1568 (Talk) 03:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow, nice find. I'm sure we can use that to get a better idea of how much spam/abuse is coming from an IP. - Could also give us a better idea on how long to block based on the IP's activity. --Az1568 (Talk) 07:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
