How Intuition Works[edit | edit source]

The principle of memory parsimony suggests that memory doesn't pass to the next redescription phase if it is not more descriptive than the representation of the previous phase. I have no way of knowing if this is true, but it might explain the reason for the mechanisms that limit the transfer of information from the explicit representation to the Declarative Representation. There are however I suspect two things happening in the explicit memory phase, analysis, where an implicit memory is reduced to smaller elements, and synthesis where those explicit representations of the elements are rebuilt to see if they are equivalent to the original implicit memory quale. The idea that the brake is only taken off if the synthesis comes out as more valuable than the original quale, is seductive, but may be only my reading of the situation. It may be just that the brake does not come off until the quale is found to be somehow complete.

Impending Results[edit | edit source]

I suggest that there is a distinction between elements held in explicit memory that are not declared yet, and elements that are held in implicit memory and not converted to explicit form yet, and that this difference is that while the explicit elements are not yet declared and therefore do not yet have a presence in consciousness, we are aware of the Feelings associated with them, and therefore of the fact that something is pending but has not yet "Gelled".
For this reason I call the mechanisms involved, sub-conscious rather than unconscious mechanisms. In any case, it makes sense that we do not transfer just any redescription, but wait until our redescriptions are substantially complete before we transfer them to Declarative Memory.

The link to Consolidation[edit | edit source]

If this is true, then insights implied by redescription of the Meta-Index to the Cerebral Cortex, a process called Consolidation by some, also will be held back, while the Meta-Index completes it's redescription, and it gets analyzed and synthesized into shape. As a result of first the non-rehearsed elements that are formed by processing of data from the Meta-Index without involving the cerebral cortex, and the analysis and synthesis steps, will result in a sub-conscious development of an increase in knowledge about the elements being so processed, we will in turn, experience a pardigm shift when they are passed again into the Meta-Index, and the previous work is connected to the implicit knowledge about the system it represents.

Storage Efficiency[edit | edit source]

Since the knowledge was redescribed and then reanalyzed and re-synthesized, the result is a more effective representation, a representation with more meaning that sits in approximately the same sized storage element that the original knowledge resided in.((indent|8}}The experience of Intuition therefore is the impending process control signals that tell us something is coming, the sudden revelation of new knowledge we didn't know we possessed, and the juxtaposition of that knowledge with the feeling of beauty or correctness that we experience as the AHA phenomena.

Quality Factors[edit | edit source]

You will note that there is no magic way of telling if the processing that has been done is correct, just that it results in deeper knowledge, and a feeling of correctness that might be wrong. It is for this reason that you really should reality check your intuitions. Part of the charge of an intuitive leap might just be the benefit perceived to be gained by an increase in storage efficiency that has nothing to do with the world it represents.
