Interim, Draft 2014-0226-01 to John Citron per request Draft (253 lines) posted 2014-0404 'as-is' on Trainz\Wikibook scratchpad page without any of the pending pen and ink edits, as need to link it today.

GENERAL COMMENTS * GEN00.0 Consistant with the philosophy of "If-we-break-it, it's-our-job-to-really-fix-it" patches to update all CM's from TS2006-SP0 should be issued for all EXE or DLL re-issue fixable mode suggested hereinafter.

  • This is a moral obligation heretofore overlooked and ignored by N3V. People that are comfortable with a Trainz release should not have to suffer from a bad change inserted by coding changes or N3V's practices and data models. Realizing they are desiring to sell newer versions, breaking older status-quo ante behaviour is never ethical. You want sales, provide added value, not broken historic behavior.
    • A prime example of this is CMP's original formulation to NOT report trainz-build tag values, as later CM's have and the concurrent BUG overlooked in each since, that of mishandling "Update available" by not discriminating with respect to Trainz-build tag values. This is a bona-fide BUG and N3V has a moral obligation to fix it.
    • Similarly, KUID and KUID2 handling is mismanaged. Internally all the CMs ought be treating KUIDS as KUID2:xxx:yyy:0 as they indeed are evaluated. In practice, in operating CM, the two forms are not equal in searching, to the discomfiture of the customers. This means things are confusing, missed, overlooked and vexing. Having to 'Show Versions' to see alternative KUIDs is plainly deliterious to efficient user time investment and so forth. Searching <kuid:xxx:yyy> should expand to include all the <KUID2:xxx:yyy:nn> forms in the list resulting. Then OBSOLETE icons have context, the user can eliminate such.
    • Related is the mishandling of the reports of updated kuids. MISSING DEPENDENCIES should not be showing obsoleted versions as a Missing dependency. THey aren't necessary so must not be shown as missing for it devalues the validity and utility of searching dependencies status icon (The yellow puzzle piece) ineffect trashing the users local database with FALSE and unhelpful information.
  • GEN01.0 Programmers totally insensitive to aging problems. In particular eyesight.
  • GEN01.a Ability to change skin and text color away from default is highly needed.
  • GEN01.b An ability to modify skin+font size+font color+font face in CM, and font stuff in Surveyor would be REALLY REALLY valuable upgrade for us older and the visually impaired. Monitor+vid card configurations, dependent settings and such vary so much customer to customer that NOT having the flexibility means we tens-of-thousands're forced to make do with proofed displays vetted by the unaged and less debilitated.
  • GEN01.c Particularly bad is the font size and coloration in TS12 Surveyor, especially SESSION EDIT WINDOW and the Mini Map gradiants' TS12 change from previous green to white font. (The latter clutters the screen with illegibility when labels are also on.
  • GEN01.d Another color for trackside versus Scenery/Industry labels would be a nice option as well. Each of these should be customer settable for his own situation. 'Restore to Default' and Save Themes highly suggested accompanying changes... don't want disappearing print after all if someone misapplies an option.
  • GEN02.0 Particularly bad is Session rules color schema. Black on current colors would be fine. Some idiot put white lettering on mostly grey backgrounds making text 'LOW CONTRAST' all-but-illegible with accompanied by the other stupid change... reducing the font sizes to ANT PRINT.
  • GEN02.a RESTORE TRS2006 LOOK SEE AND FEEL.
  • GEN02.b Trash any ant print in the programs.
  • GEN02.c DEFAULT Min 'printers font size' (1 pt = 1/72nd inch) should be 10pt to 12pr for your actual user base AFTER monitor scaling. If the tools menu grows to take up the whole left margin, so be it. Straining to see/read something necessary is very frustrating and counter-productive and very deliterious to an enjoyable experience.
  • GEN02.d Kids eyes can read large text fine, post 45 year-old eyes have adjustment issues young programmers need to be sensitive too. With a customization ability, the kids can select a smaller font at need.
  • GEN02.e Regardless of settings, search window 'current line' should wrap to show whole titles of 'Username' data field.
  • GEN03. Surveyor and Driver MAPS had nice legible green GRADIENT DATA... White in TS12 makes them blend into other data types messing with peoples' time who are trying to smooth terrain and appearance.
  • GEN04. Loose a lot of time because Screen zooms or begins to zoom to medium elevation pseudo-flying-looking-down mode. THAT FOCAL TRIGGER ca 500-1000m too soon. Raise at least 300 meters. Current switch point is just about where one wants to tour a panarama of fixed layout.
  • GEN05. Back in TRS2006... Elimination of TYPE and REGION tags manifesting in Surveyor tools was counterproductive. Breaking selectable sub-groups is opposite to the needs of users trying to remember how to find an single asset name to plop down. Pick list doesn't cut it with Category-Class filtering alone -- Dataset should allow user understanding to subcategorize such groupings. WHAT IS NEEDED is ability to allow USERS to override AUTHORS and edit those tags in both Surveyor, viewer and pick APPS and at the very least from CM--without a need to manually open config.txt and edit... CM should allow various adjustments in other words using popup APIs while maintaining CURRENT SEARCH.
  • GEN06. History of Current Search and last selections too short in real life error fixing. Consider some specific search which then shows assets with missing dependancies. Now need to change screen to display for assets to see the missing asssets (second screen) so can evaluate versions and/or reported errors and warnings and so forth. Any one asset examination may lead to another search, so third is used. Resolving that, usually means importing or DLS machinations... usually involving a fourth screen. The ORIGINAL TASK you were about is now almost always gone... so if you didn't manually save that search you are screwed again by the programmers doing coding on the cheap and convenient for them, not software crafted to the users common needs.
  • GEN07. KUID2 version assets should not generate a missing dependancy puzzle piece when the prior assets are not present. If five failed and the sixth trial works, ':5' version is all that matters INCLUDING WHENEVER something else is referencing an earlier version. (Logically, the CM data base may want to track the substitute, but CM should not be written to bother humans about an earlier missing version, unless parts of it are needed by reference. In that case, Trainz should create a whole corrected asset and kill the earlier versions itself.
  • GEN08. BADLY need data search range and especially a date range abilty in CM, we humans work in spurts, recall by association, and frequently work past one days end (MIDNIGHT... during scarce and valuable 'HOBBY TIME') and the beginning of the next... or over several groups of days, our highly constrained time permitting. Selecting individual days with ANDs is tedious to say the least, and worst, cannot be saved. (the dates aren't saved but normalise to 'today'.)
  • GEN08b. Allow dates in search pane as saved criteria in CM, and it's seatrch tabs
  • GEN08c. Some wildcarding in search parameters would be greatly appreciated. Especially at least a two field search with wilddards in between. Tektronics or possibly DEC once had a beautiful command line search which would be good. '/tag1/*/tag2/' was better than a regex for finding variable length terms. Some regex could be built in as well. '//Ctag1Ctag2C*' (or '//Ctag1CC*tag2C' as an alternive to the first example) would enable the delimiter to subst so that character would be the new escaped delimiter... what ever the character might be.
  • GEN08d-1. DOUBLE escape after a space following a valid find string would have the last part be a substitution string. THAT required a second escape character which was usually the '$' IIRC. Thus '/tag1/*/$tag2$/ /$replacement$/' would replace 'tag2' and similarly, '/tag1/*/$*$//tag2/ /$insert_this$/ would split and insert the term. Also used were # for a digit, ? for a single char and '^nn' to repeat a type so ?^15 would count fifteen anycharacters, whilst #^(2-7) allowed for variable number digit sequences, which would include both decimal points, scientific notation (-1.5408E-04) and signs if necessary in such.
  • GEN08d2. Given such tooling, would like to have RENAMING on the fly inside CM, even Surveyor... some way to locally change the term string of an asset (username). Could be implemented as an alias term CM inserts into the config.
  • GEN09. Along similar lines, adding a revisions and notes tag in the config would be very welcome the revisions field would display as an header prefixing the asset description data and the notes as an addendum suffixing the asset description data.
  • GEN10. Those three and the trainz-build codes need be viewable in an auxillary window in surveyor... Said content display window would change when the selected item is accessed in the surveyor tools tabs. The user would toggle it open and closed with a hotkey toggle and/or close button.
  • GEN09.a Need to self-identify which asset is list of errors and warnings in titlebars
  • GEN09.b IMPORT .cdp and Content... 'TASK COMPLETED' 'DETAILS' messages should pair both asset names and kuids (ALWAYS ACTUALLY) This was unhelpful results:

  • GEN09c) Would actually be quite handy to have these screens have a kuid stream output, a comma separated list of the kuids listed in the message. Something we can paste in (including unknown location Kuids) into the search window or capture to a text file to later pursue missing assets. As is, we have to go through several other screens to capture dependencies which are unknown location (missing, not on DLS nor local).

09d) Several different output arrangements by click box selection would be nice

09e) [CTRL]-[A] + [CTRL]-[C} needs to work on all these message boxs and APIs. Default should then list both kuids and names with messages. Excepting error and warnings report... which should have those indentifiers in the tit6le bar... solutions sometimes take a while to research... other things demand attention, so having pairing with folders open for edit and a results window... is far more efficient than guessing!

10. Programmers need to use unique names for executables Windows finds out about. The overuse of Trainz.exe (one in bin one as launcher from installation's root) is confusing at best. Worse still is no distinction between versions in name for those who operate multiple Trainz legacy varieties too. Poor practice in any event given stand-alone nature of evolving product.

  • GEN11.0 Task complete message windows, and all popup windows in general: assaying extent of errors frequently has 3-5 open at once to see where same error by same author is occuring. Need to self-identify which asset is list of errors and warnings in titlebars. Further, if possible a different icon in Windows 'open processes' (Taskbars tabs) would be valuable, at LEAST one different from CM and another different for TADdaemon (if visible).


Main Menu wishlist 01a. Author column of Routes and Sessions

01b. Title bar show folder pathspec and trainz-build

02a. Columns listing Last ALTERED date and last access date

02b. and kuids (All optional toggle or click box or drop down selectable)

03. MAIN MENU -- RESUME historic behavior of positioning list menu to last loaded route and session, or at least display what it was. (Prefer the TS2009-TRS2004 historic menu overall)

04. MAIN MENU -- 'Navigation Action buttons' at or near top (Like browsers), not down at screen bottom nor any at right and left... launch interface frankly sucks.

COM05.0 CM+SUR -- Desire Two run-time EDITABLE USER 'AUX-DESCRIPTIONs fields' that individual users can add and edit in both CM and Surveyor, adding that capability to viewer mode asset browsers like Railyard and the proposed 'Trackside" (or what ever name is given the general asset viewer(s). These should be click-box activated or disabled to see only the description (default) or any combo of the three.

COM05.a New Tag "Aux-description1" would prefix in CM and any in surveyor pop-up description view (Suggested else where in detail).

COM05.b Whilst tag "Aux-description2" or "Revisions-record" would append to current string when things display, if enabled. (I'd use this to display a change record, of modified assets. (e.g. Date, installed newer data structures and thumbnails, deleted obsolescent tags 'region', 'type' 'asset-filename', [Or whatever] and advanced Kuid to Kuid2 and trainz-build to V2.6 ,[Or whatever]. This latter could and should be handled in a remarks header block as a file header ID.

06. Ability to search keywords or string in both CM and Surveyor DESCRIPTION FIELDS... including proposed 'Aux-description' augmentations. [Like all good coding, where necessary legacy Trainz releases should have a Patch to ignore such new data and data formats. The same patch project should be used to fix the various CMs so that they all (TRS2006, TC1&2, TC3...) ignore versions currently listed as AVAILABLE UPDATES when in fact those are in data formats incompatible with earlier Trainz. (i.e. BUG IN CM programming: Assets to build v3.7 should NOT be reported as available in TS10 etc. Assets to 3.0 should not be reported as Out of Date in TC3, and its predecessors.)

SURVEYOR NEEDS and shortcomings...

  • SUR01. NEW TOOL BUTTON==Need ability to set numeric height and rotation on F3-O scenery objects; sometimes things manifest with slight offset angle that cannot be eliminated, ditto elevation differential making it impossible to blend two or more into one displayed entity/virtual object.
  • SUR02. NEW TOOL BUTTON==Need ability to set a fixed (default) angle of F3-O scenery items in put down. (e.g. all the houses in a row development parrallel to a street oriented at compass 323 or 45 or 165 degrees...) THis means the auto-rotation setting in OPTIONS needs local override toggle and data input. USE THE SPACE wasted currently by "Advanced Tools" (WHAT A CROCK OF...) expanders...
  • SUR03. Pick list needs to respond to tool activated so only F3 items are in when tool active, so only F4-Y objects (trackside) show when that tool selected, etc.
  • SUR04. Need to be able to save and import nn+1 pick list(s) -- users names and options (...\Settings\picks\*.txt suggested)
  • SUR05. Get tools inconsistent -- all should stay in get mode until A for Add hotkey pressed.
  • SUR06. TEXTURE TOOL needs overhauled so selected texture name/title of texture appears in edit line.
  • SUR07. Elevation back away 'zoom to map mode' needs switching-point trigger capability to be set by user or raised at least 1000 feet above current trigger point, and THAT VALUE should be the default for user set point when fixed. [High priority--this is costing lots of lost time in undesired focal shifts.]
  • SUR08. BADLY NEED hot key for 'View errors and warnings'.
  • SUR09. Changing of perspective by slight zoom back to see wider panorama/view is very annoying -- 3x out of four imposes a long delay... [suspect presumably because of LOD meshes???]
  • SUR10. Would like a hotkey to set angle of view relative to horizon when viewing obliquely downwards and 'flying' above terrain. Mounse rolls too far, too frequently stopping on either side of best angle as wanted.
  • SUR11.a Eliminating Objects subgrouping type control in surveyor a bad mistake. Industries vs buildings etc. had a filtering and location ability that was very useful. Far more useful than huge list format now in TS12.
  • SUR11.b New Feature very much desired: HOTKEY ability to toggle widening of tool menu displays so can read the whole title of items.
  • SUR12. Wanted: Global GET TOOL - Press hotkey then clickon whatever, gives the proper tool tab, then KUID under mouse tool tip.
  • SUR13. If tab is active, any get key should open tab and display the get... not waste users time.
  • SUR14. Railyard spinoff-allow viewing of F3-O objects and preferrably also F3-S, F4-Y, F2 textures, ideally in popup from in CM like viewing the config.txt file.
  • SUR15. TOOL API's and Pick List, etc... popup items using up screen space including mini-map should be dragable to second or third head monitors AND ALSO RESIZABLE!
  • SUR16. CLICK BUTTON IN SURVEYOR AND CM to 'UNFAVORITE' an asset... i.e. NEVER SHOW ME THIS ITEM AGAIN in Surveyor (e.g. Flip Trees in a Speedtreed route, BR rollng stock in US etc.) Whether this is same as disabling the item in CM or archiving it, or some third mode, don't care. Disabling seems about right, but in CM would LOVE TO HIDE THOSE THINGS TOO!
  • SUR17. WANT A 'PICK LIST OF (adjustment) TOOL BUTTONS' w/data seeting input fields, perhaps on F8?
  • SUR18. GET TOOLS MUST STOP DEFAULTING to ADD. I can hit the 'A' hotkey myself.
  • SUR19. Surveyor ability to toggle sounds on and off whilst working an area would be nice. Got a wolf right where I need to do a lot more development ... that really annoys the wife and me!
  • SUR20. Compass rose added in the Trainz Classics in the exactly worst place on the minimap for those of us using one monitor more often than not. THAT MODE requires a small mini map extended off the screen lower left corner... making the compass rose overtop some very valuable views... near center screen, where the mouse moves the screen/angle and keys rotate the view.
  • SUR21. 'Circumstansial Selectable Pick groups' ... Seperate Pick List both by type and some user definable groups activated by 'click buttons'... trying to just pick textures they are mixed with other things really slowing down the utility of Pick list. IF "Bookmarks buttons" had a second row coresponding to other pick lists, all savable and transportable route to route, etc. (Export should be an external and EDITABLE comma delimited multiline TXT file enabling users to copy, edit, or archive! 'Input' and 'save as' and 'merge with' file at some path specified too. Extracting a portion ('Export Part As...' and saving as would be nice but not necessary feature.)
  • SUR22. LIST ABILITY of Asset type X "In this Route"... for example... list all textures on ground used so far on this route and put them in a pick list type display applett.
  • SUR23. Asset choosing tools should allow description in Surveyor mode in an optional pop-up screen. Popup concieved to be an extension of current tool set and applies solely to selected asset. Scrolling through those scrolls the descritions in the new popup enhanced.

  • CMn01. Errors are so prevalent, need View Errors and Warnings API in title bar to give title of asset being reported. In the real world, we have no choice but to chase more than one error at a time now and then. [Very High Priority]
  • CMn02. <kuid:-10:197>
  • CMn03. CM BADLY NEEDS WEB type interface so pervasive nowadays to backspace to previous search, and such searches as are kept in que, needs much longer length. Four just isn't enough and eight might not be either. 16 would be more than enough in any circumstance I could keep straight. Bumping off listed items in searches list would be a good feature to have, suggest drag and toss feature.
  • CMn04. DUP 14 above: Railyard spinoff-allow viewing of F3-O objects and preferrably also F3-S, F4-Y, F2 textures, ideally in popup from in CM like viewing the config.txt file.
  • CMn05. Ability to save download que, set it aside and prioritize a different DLS list first. reboot Trainz or computer or in any event return to it or any other saved list at a later time more convenient to the user.
  • CMn06. Listing ability of stuff in Download helper
  • CMn07. Expand codes for category region to indlude continental expanses, e.g. Mexico, US+ Canada find much in the way of identical rolling stock types.
  • CMn08. Capture current search/main list to savable kuid list (Text file will do fine, best if search then allowe import of same. Manual cut and paste fine too for me.)
  • CMn09. Asset Description to be 1st item, then screenshot in ASSET DETAILS pane
  • CMn10. CLICK BOX on SEARCH PANE to disable including DLS and Local and Built In items selectively. Setting three criteria (Name_+AND NOT+ON DOWNLOAD STN is time disrespectful. NEED TOO OFTEN.
  • CMn11. Boolean search params... move to top of list, or preferably loose and replace with click-box implementation where the clickbox applies to the next search field following. Rearranging search to a top bar would be advisable--the left panes are overly busy and overworked.
  • CMn12. Along the same lines revising the 'Asset Details' pane to a relocatable resizable window format [or this older (option selectable) placement] would be good. Description and screenshot are most important, so current placement as bottom items is contraindicated.
  • CMn13. Finding a list of KUIDs comes up as obsoletes, when should default to showing current kuid installed and active if that's suplanting it. CHANGE THE FONT COLOR AT LEAST SHOWING the little OBSOLETE iconography means the asset is coming up obsolete when it's the only version still to be found. (May be a circumstance with new kuid obsoleting an updated one. Seen in SS Log Dump Diesel, misstated: <kuid2:86661:144048:2> (replacement) vs. <kuid:86661:144012>, the first has the 2nd in obsolete table. BOTH were in data base. Having the disposihle one come up in red font would let people know is deletable asset. Generated errors in newer Trainz apparently. Part of Northbay County routes.

  • CMn14.0 Need a right Click Copy KUIDS ONLY for CM Main Display items. Sometimes want just a comma separated list, for example to search another Trainz's CM for said assets.
  • CMn15.0 CURRENT SEARCH 'Tab' should return user to the prior search selected by the main search tool in the left CM/CMP Pane -- not OVERRIGHT THAT with the results of clicking "VIEW IN MAIN LIST", or any of it's derived subsequent Show Dependencies applets.
  • CMn15.a THIS IS AN URGENT CHANGE NEED that would greatly aid user productivity and experiences with Trainz--downloading many assets, especially routes and sessions, often returns a large "PUNCH LIST" of further items that need to be downloaded.
  • CMn15.b The ONLY way to currently capture and enter these into the Download Helper pane is to SHOW IN MAIN LIST... then drag and drop -- messing up a larger work process and interfering with ongoing project tasks (INTERUPTIONS SUCK). VERY VEXING.
  • CMn15.c Recommend: Adding clidk box "ADD Updates and missing dependencies to the Show Dependencies applet. One click adds any updated or missing dependency available on the DLS to the CM DOWNLOAD HELPER PANE.
  • CMn15.d Further, missing dependencies NOT ON THE DLS ought to append a log file as follows:

  • CMn16.0 HOTKEY and/or menubar toggle between Large and Small Icons.

- Really need a Medium size, small icons can't be made out, but that's best for maximizing data listed seen. LARGE for figuring out the status. A blend of the two would be greatly appreciated. Hence a rotating toggle would work.


  • CMn17.0 CMs occasionally get display all bolloxed up, so Settings click box to reinitialize display (as when starting up) would cut down on the quitting our and relaunching (and reduce frustration because of interupted thought process, work in prograss.)
  • CMn18.0 IMPORTING CDPs... The Task COmplete popup needs the STANDARD show in 'Main View' option button even for case when ALL ASSETS SKIPPED because already present. And the default behavior should be to show all in the CDP when so viewing a mixed bag of imports and skipped. AT THE LEAST this would help us better organize and label collected CDPs without resorting to pasting the names in and then one by one searching what the heck was there and came in (or was present in the cdp).


  • CMn19.0 CDP Preview read and display needed, not a base import, but data to decide if import is GOOD... Kuids list, Names, Trainz-build at a mininum. Option to VIEW in MAIN SCREEN and if there, check the lot for updates on the DLS (Versions listed for each, in other words)
  • CMn20.0 Importing CDPs or otherwise, View in Main List needs to display the UNKNOWN KUIDs in the same list so we can at least get the picture of how much we're screwed by downloading that route or session... If CM could manage a running list of missing assets we can get as a text report file, that would be a great time saving feature.
  • CMn21.0 Selecting a batch (Screenful) of assets and lauching view Versions, needs allow a cut and paste save at least for missing (ny definintion UNKNOWN to the DLS) assets.
  • CMn22.0 Task Complete popups universally need report which version in reporting CM output results, with TADdaemon running 3 CMs at once and cross loading assets has been a frequent experience this past week.
  • CMn23.0 Having the registry entry for CPS track various installations and ask which Trainz to launch/load them into would be a nice safeguard. An accidental click had TRS2006 importing TS09--TS12 data yesterday...
  • CMn24.0 INSTALL A THUMNAIL AUTOMATICALLY feature. A) adapt Railyard to show any asset. The software ia already present in surveyor ot generate the rotating images... adapt so
    • CMn24.a Scenery ([f3]-[O] selections and many [f4]-[Y] assets can be viewed in a standard Trainz board with some default setups of terrain based on size of the asset generated geometry (tiny, small, medium, large corresponding to a road sign/trackside small footprint asset, house size, commercial building size, Factory/Level Bridges assets with ample lengths). Each of those can be placed in a locus a fixed radial distance from the (focal length) virtual camera, the object virtually rotated to maximize width aspect, and if rectangular camera position automatically precessed around (i.e. to show two building faces) and canted (move camera up to tree top height) to establish a perspective view. SNAP SNAP. AUTO EDIT the configs.
  • CMn25.0 Task complete message windows, and all popup windows in general: assaying extent of errors frequently has 3-5 open at once to see where same error by same author is occuring. Need to self-identify which asset is list of errors and warnings in titlebars. Further, if possible a different icon in Windows 'open processes' (Taskbars tabs) would be valuable, at LEAST one different from CM and another different for TADdaemon (if visible).
  • CMn26.0 Ordering of items in Search drop down needs refactored to place those needed most often up the top, AND and OR, NAME, AUTHOR, KUID, immediately come to mind as do local, DLS and installed. Category should be just after booleans.
  • CMn27.0 Displaying a list of assets in such and such should not loose the current search. Further, especially should have search combo's in search pane listed over list of kuids. Even going one page past, measn guessing on what resulted 3-30 minutes ago. Mostly I miss finding my way back. More history would be best, preferrably like a Broswer history of at least 16 items in drop down form, most recent top to bottom. Date installed, Date modified, era, region at bottom. Alternatively this order and alphabetical with click box toggle.


zzz DRIVER SHORTCOMINGS

  • DVR01. Font size on Driver Map is about 2 pt too small for older viewers. Desire a menu option to select larger sizes from this default as the new minimum of a set of selectable font scales.
  • DVR02. Repeat above for default font size in HTML pop-up Windows
  • DVR03. TS12 switch to white on other white lettering Gradients data is HIGHLY problematic. GIVE US GREEN AGAIN Please. Having another text color for some frequent assets would also be handy-suggest yellow for junction names and a seperate toggle to hide those labels or the Red-Green controls which can overwhelm accessing the data one actually needs when trying to get an overview of upcoming tracks and yards. Need to process junctions follows after getting a sense of what is needed.
