ALL ABOUT ME -
My name is Carrie Ivernelle Thigpen. I am a currently a Junior majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies, and it is my prayer that I earn my Bachelor's Degreee along with all of the other necessary requirements to become an Elementary School Teacher before I am 100 years old! I am now a Substitute Teacher for Newport News Public Schools and love it so much that I truly can not see myself doing anything else for a living. I was born in Trenton New Jersey, but my family moved to Virgina when I was only 10, so I consider myself to be a true Virginian, even though I also had the opportunity to live in a few other states and another country (Germany) since I became an adult. I graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News, Virginia in 1976, and then I attended Virginia State University in Petersburg. After taking a break that turned out to be much longer than I intended, I finally went back to Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virgina and earned my A.S. Degree in Social Science. I have 3 children that I am very proud of - 27 year old twins that reside in South Carolina, and a 12 year old daughter that lives with me. I am also a published author of 2 novels. The first one is entitled "I Brought It On Myself" and is based on my personal life. This book also made the Black Expressions Book Club list, was advertised in the 2008 February issues of Ebony and Essence magazines, and is currently being used in some Sociology classes. I am so proud of it! The second one is entitled "What They Didn't Know" and is a love story/drama/mystery novel. Although the first one is most dearest to my heart, I have to admit that I had more fun writing the second one. They're available in all book stores, so if you get a chance, pick them up and tell me what you think!
MY PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION -
Whenever I hear the word Education, one word comes to mind - PRICELESS. I feel that Education is the key to success in life, and this is becoming more and more true as time quickly progresses. I can remember my mother telling me when I was a child that "you learn something new every day," and even until now, I always enjoy recalling something that I have learned at my day's end. It is because of this that the very thought of me becoming a teacher, and being an influence in the lives of children by teaching them things that they will need as they continue in life, is very exciting to me. We (teachers) are the ones who prepare the children for the future world. Preparing children for the future world? What job could possibly be more challenging and rewarding?
