The English word algol comes from Arabic al ghûl. The Arabian ghoul is a desert-dwelling, shape-shifting demon that robs graves and feeds on the dead. Ghouls lure travelers into the desert wastes to devour them. The star Beta Persei, commonly known as Algol, is named after this creature. All things considered, an appropriate name for a progamming language.
