The monkey fist is both a decorative knot and a heaving knot. It can be tied with something inside it to make it float or make it heavier and easier to throw.

First make a number of loops stacked like in the picture. Then make the same number of wraps around the first three wraps. Then make the same number of wraps that go around the second set of wraps but are inside the first set of wraps. Then tighten the knot by working the slack around the knot from one end to the other.
