Practice Quiz 1

It's time now to test what you have learned in the past 3 lessons and alphabet. This exam will test your knowledge in the alphabet, vocabulary, grammar, and culture. If you have scored at least more than a 70%, then you should be safe in moving on to the next lessons. If not, you should go back and review the past few lessons and work on the topics that stumped you the most. Good luck, аьтто хийла!

Part I: Language and Alphabet - these questions will test your ability to pick up on the Chechen alphabet.

1. How would you transliterate So khuzakh 'ash vu in Cyrillic?

Хьан цIе хIун ю?
This would transliterate as "Han ts'e hun yu" and means "What is your name"
Нохчийн мотт чIогIа хаза бу.
This would transliterate as "Nohchyn mott ch'ogh haz vu" and mean "The Chechen language is very beautiful"
Со кхузахь Iаш ву.
This is the correct answer. It means "I live here"
Со хIийнца АшгIабат-гIалахь ву.
This would transliterate as "So h'ints Asghabat-ghalakh vu" and mean "I am now in Ashgabat".

2. What sound in English does the Chechen letter, Аь, closely resemble?

"A" as in "apple"
This is the correct answer. Аь closely resembles that of typical short "a" vowel sound in English, like in "apple" and "path"
"A" as in "fade"
This letter does not make a long "a" sound. "A" as in "fade" would be represented by the Chechen diphthong of "ей".
"O" as in "pond"
Sometimes in foreign languages, the "a" might sound like a short "a" sound or a short "o" sound, but not in this case. That would just be a normal А in Chechen.
"Ab" as in "abstract"
Although the Chechen letter, Аь, might look like an "a" and a "b" together, it does not resemble these letters in English

3. What other two letters in Chechen when combined can make the same sound as the letter Я?

уа
These letters make the sound, "ua". The Chechen, "У", is actually a "u" sound.
ва
These letters make the sound "va" or "wa".
ра
These letters make the sound "ra", which might confuse the learner since Я looks like an "r" in English
йа
This is the correct answer. ЙА can make the sound, "ya", which is the same sound the letter Я makes

4. What would the word, Чудигар, transliterate to in English?

Shudigar
This would be Шудигар
Chudigar
This is the correct answer. Careful not to confuse the false friend letters with English
Hydigap
This would be Хидигап
Chydirap
This would be Чудирап

Indo-European, Germanic, North Germanic
Chechen is not part of the Indo-European language family
Indo-European, Caucasian, Nakh

Caucasian, North Caucasian, Nakh
