This book gives an overview of articulatory phonetics, acoustic phonetics and some introductory auditory phonetics, primarily focusing on sounds as objects of study. It is intended to introduce the basics of speech production (a physiological topic), speech sounds (a physical topic) and speech perception (a psychological topic). They form the basis of Phonology, an area of linguistics proper, which studies how sounds are organised into patterns in language and in the human mind.
