The football field may differ slightly from place to place, but all football fields have some things in common. One of the first things one notices about a football field is that it has a 100-yard middle capped off by 10-yard end zones. These end zones are distinguished by markings on the field. Also, the field is surrounded by a giant white line. At the side of the field, this line forms the sideline of the field. There are fine white markings down the middle of the field. These are hash marks, which the ball is always placed between before it is snapped, and the spacing depends on what type of football is being played. The thick white lines running the width of the field are yard lines, which aid in the determination of the ball's position. Above each end zone is a crossbar.
