The Basics

My name is Megan Heath and I have lived in Suffolk, Virginia for all 18.5 years of my life. Suffolk gets a reputation of being all country roads and farms, probably because it's home to Planter's Peanuts, but really it isn't anything like that. Northern Suffolk, where I'm from, is a developing urban part of Hampton Roads and I love having the country feel, yet still being close to the city. I grew up with my father being active duty Navy, yet somehow managed to stay in one house my entire life. I have two sisters, one older, age 21, and one younger, age 12, so being the middle daughter out of three girls has been an experience, to say the least.

Hobbies

Considering I am a full time college student and part time employee at Perry Library, I rarely get much free time anymore. When I do get a moment to myself, I usually spend it listening to music, going to concerts, drawing, taking pictures, or just relaxing with my friends. I'm just an average teenager with a busy schedule.

Why I Want to Teach Kindergarten

I've always been the kind of person who loves helping others and who wanted to make a difference in someone's life. Helping raise my younger sister, as well as babysitting and taking care of young children has made me realize how the field of education is the perfect career for me. I really enjoying teaching children things and watching their minds develop as they grow. I want to be the kind of kindergarten teacher, whose students still remember me when they are graduating highschool. I want to make a difference in the way children learn and view their educational careers; I figure Kindergarten is a wonderful place to create the foundation for the rest of their future.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe to be a successful teacher, you have to be willing to step outside the box. Paper and pencil, lecture teaching just does not work for the children of today. I think teachers should enter their classroom with enthusiasm and a positive energy; otherwise, their students will feel negative attitudes and therefore, not have as successful a learning experience as they could have had. I believe it is important for educators to be able to assess each student's needs and teach them based on those needs. All children learn differently, and therefore, teachers must be able to cater to each students learning style; whether they learn visually, by listening or kinesthetically. I believe in inclusive classrooms as well as conducting cooperative learning where students work in groups to achieve a goal. Because, I plan to teach younger children (PK-3), it is even more vital to keep them engaged and alert to what they are learning. I believe educators should incorporate technology into their classroom; WebQuests, videos, and interactive games are just a few ways in which teachers can do this. Not only should a teacher be able to administer information to the students, but she should also mold their minds and help them to make better choices with their lives. Conducting a classroom where students as well as the teacher show respect to everyone and there is not judgment or bullying is key to a successful classroom.
