Dr. Martin Maechler is a senior scientist and lecturer at the ETH Zurich. With a PhD in mathematics about nonparametric regression and curve estimation, he has been involved in computational statistics in several directions, notably robust statistics, clustering, and numerical computations, notably with (sparse) matrices. He has been a member of the R core team since its very beginning, maintainer of several R packages, notably the recommended Matrix and cluster ones.
