MODEL: ORIGAMI FISH[edit | edit source]

A sequence of folds used to make the origami fish
STEP 1: Square sheet of paper
  • Students are asked to identify the shape of the paper.
  • How many corners does it have?
  • How many sides does it have?
  • Identify an object having this shape in the surroundings.
STEP 2: Fold across a diagonal (Bring one corner to the opposite corner and fold)
  • What is the shape that results?
  • How many corners does this shape have? Compare with that of square.
  • How many sides does this shape have? Compare with that of square.
  • How many triangles are formed?
STEP 3: Unfold, and then fold across the other diagonal (Bring one corner to the opposite corner and fold)
  • Students talk about this shape based on the previous observations.
STEP 4: Unfold and then fold the square in half (bring one side to its opposite side and fold)
  • What is the shape that results?
  • How many corners does this shape have? Compare with that of square
  • Are the sides of this shape longer or shorter than that of a square?
  • How many rectangles are there?
STEP 5: Unfold and then fold the square in half (bring one side to its opposite side and fold)
  • Is this shape same as the previous one?
  • Describe the shape.
STEP 6: Unfold. A crease pattern results.
  • There are several lines found on the square now.
  • Count the number of lines.
  • Identify the standing lines and sleeping lines
