Sir John Franklin

Sir John Franklin was a royal navy officer, but he was best known for his super exploring in the Arctic. He was born in 1786 and died on his last expedition to find the North West passage in 1847.

In total Franklin made four journeys to the Arctic. On his second expedition (1819-1822) the party and him ran out of food and were forced to eat leather parts of their clothes. However when they returned the public were thrilled by the amazing and terrifying stories he told, Sir John Franklin became a hero.

His last expedition

Sir John Franklin made his last expedition in 1845 when he was 59 years of age, he offered to lead the journey since it was in search of the North West passage. John had been retired from an Arctic explorer for 20 years. Everyone thought that he was the best person for the job and people were asking to go with him. He took 2 ships with him the Erebus and the Terror. On the front of each ship they had sheets of iron to break though the ice they went through.

The crew was made up of 129 officers and men from the navy.
