Articles are written with three levels of increasing text complexity to align with Common Core State Standards.[1]

  • The lead section is written with the least complexity (2nd grade level).
  • The main article is written at third-grade level.
  • The advanced section is written at a higher level (±5th grade).

Change headers and sidebar to fit article.

Lead Section[edit | edit source]

Introductory paragraph(s) written at a lower complexity level. What is this article about? What is the learning goal? The lead section doesn't have a header.

Main Article[edit | edit source]

Don't neglect photos and graphics. Captions are good for reluctant readers.[2] Be careful to only use Creative Commons or public domain images.

Written at a third grade level. Limit to about one printed page. Define important terms using the hover-over template: {{H:title|definition of word|word}}

End main article with key questions.

Questions[edit | edit source]

  • What makes Portland weird?
  • Who are hipsters?
  • Why doesn't Portland have an NFL team?

Advanced Section[edit | edit source]

Additional material at a higher complexity level.
