Introduction[edit | edit source]

With the internet, comes the power to communicate with many different people across the world, all the while staying anonymous. Of course, this also comes with it's own set of problems. Bullying and insulting, among other problems are prominent on the internet. In this book, we will discuss basic netiquette, so that way you can be a better person on the internet.

Cyber-bullying[edit | edit source]

Being anonymous has it's problems. Many people take this opportunity to act unlike themselves, such as being more aggressive towards other people. Cyber-bullying is a problem that stems from this. Online, your opinions are open to everyone to critique. This may bring people who insult you for you views. Many times, you can choose to ignore or block them, but sometimes it has real life consequences. For example, cyber-bullying may transfer over to real-life bullying. It may cause people to view themselves in a worse light, or feel worse, which could lead to depression, and in some rare cases, even suicide. So while cyber-bullying may seem easy to deal with, sometimes it can have disastrous consequences.

Two Basic Computer Rules[edit | edit source]

Usually, there are two main rules for using someone else's computer. These are:

  1. Treat other's technology with respect. Don't be rough with it.
  2. Don't go snooping into other's private files. They don't want you looking at what they want to keep private. It's like someone looking through your backpack or office without permission, it just feels bad.

Communication[edit | edit source]

With the internet, we can talk with anyone, anywhere, anytime. But, using text can be worse than just speaking to someone. For example, sarcasm may not be picked up on as easily without that tone of voice to go along with it. For example, an exclamation point can indicate anger, surprise, and excitement. Sometimes, it's hard to tell which. There are some strategies to help with miscommunication. These are:

  1. Remember to proof-read. This can help in case you misspell, or have bad grammar.
  2. Try to see yourself as the person reading what you sent. How might they read it?
  3. Research your information carefully.
  4. If something is intercommunicated, try to fix the problem right away.

Gaming[edit | edit source]

Gaming is very big in the world nowadays. This means that when playing a video game, you can meet people from all over the world. Of course, this can lead to some bad interactions, so here are some tips to help prevent those.

  1. Remember that you are playing a game. Be a good sport.
  2. Don't just quit when you are losing. This sucks, especially for your team. Try and stick with them to the end.
  3. Say "gg" , or "good game" at the end of games. This can help others feel better.
  4. Mute your microphone if the background is loud. Nobody wants to hear yelling or the TV turned up too loud.
  5. Be nice to new players. Everyone started out as a noob.
  6. Don't curse too much. Children may be playing online.
  7. Have fun. It's just a game.

Posting Pictures[edit | edit source]

Unless someone deletes them, pictures on the internet are going to stick around forever. Sometimes people feel uncomfortable of pictures being taken of them, and especially of them being put online. Consider these things before posting a picture.

  1. Have you asked the person for permission?
  2. How will other people feel about the picture?
  3. Consider your future. Is the picture something that may affect your chances of employment in the future?
  4. Think about how the post will be in a month. Will it still be funny?
