My name is April and I am originally from Los Angeles, California. I moved to Hampton to attend Hampton University. I received my BA in psychology from Hampton University in 2006. I didn't realize I wanted to be a teacher until I became a mentor during my senior year. I really enjoyed working with the kids in the program, and from there I began to change my plans for the future. Everyone thought I was crazy in the beginning, but now they all understand my journey. I am currently teaching 2nd grade. I am taking courses at ODU to fulfill my licensure requirements.
I think students should share the role of decision making with their teacher. I have noticed that students are more enthusiastic about learning when they feel they have some control in the process. Students need a quality education that includes technology and differentiated instruction. I think students need more than pencil and paper activities; they need interactive projects that really impact their learning experience.
