The challenges involved in caving vary according to the cave being visited, but — in addition to the total absence of light beyond the entrance — often include the negotiation of pitches, squeezes, and water hazards. This book aims to give a guide to the techniques and practices used when things do go wrong, to prevent an accident becoming an incident. Cave diving is a much more hazardous sub-specialty, and related rescue techniques will not be covered here.
