Week 1 Notes[edit | edit source]

Wikibooks Chapter: Cows (Anna, Ziyu and Alex)

AFTER NOTE: MIGHT BE REALLY INTERESTING TO LOOK AT ALL FOUR CATEGORIES WITH AN EMPHASIS ON HOW THEY RELATE TO MCDONALDS.

  • Implications of the cow from interdisciplinary perspectives: interwoven with different ideas/outlooks globally, important cog in wheel of cultural shift/climate change?
  • CATEGORIES:
    • Scientific - we know that the intense need for beef etc is ruining a lot of the natural world (Alex - film Cowspiracy??). Important to note HOW much we rely on cows for daily lives: milk, beef, cheese, butter, yoghurt... OBJECTIVE.
    • Philosophical/Political - Hindu faith & beliefs about the cow. Political now: [1] [2] Beef alternatives for India!
    • Ethics - Factory farming etc, article on Rosamund Young (secret life of cows) might be nice contrast (objective/more subjective?) - Young interview: [3] - Article demonstrating the ethics have always been questionable: [4]
    • Economics - [5][6] First article really interesting and current, about beef consumption on the rise in SE Asia, and the use of other meat (buffalo etc) as price substitute. Interesting global perspective? Second article: Do beef producers understand the economics of natural production? Another interesting take.

THERE ARE ALWAYS ARTICLES ABOUT MCDONALDS! REFS THAT COULD BE USED IF WE TAKE THAT PERSPECTIVE:

SCIENTIFIC: [7] [8]

PHILOSOPHICAL (Anthropological?): [9] [10]

ETHICS/SUSTAINABILITY: [11] [12]

ECONOMICS: [13][14]

Week 2 Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Difference between social/environment religious awareness and then the business/economics/cow factory normal diet culture.
  2. the root of the cause in a disciplinary way
  3. Sociological/Culture/anthropology for eating cows
    1. habit and culture and social stigma for it being normal to eat cows. So the habits and social stigma and the anthropological reason.
    2. Social anthropology - where you study the culture of the people which is our point
    3. THE LIFE OF COWS - shows how the thing that makes you human is not the outside but tis the way you interact with the world. and since cows act like people hence they are very equal and just as good as everyone else.
  4. Economical another money maker/product to sell and consume with byproducts and environmental degradation
    1. the problem lies within the fact that the economical viewpoint and process with using cows as another product creates such environmental problems, that cows are not the correct product to produce in such a "factory" way, like other goods and services are used. That may lie within the fact of trying to make a product out of the incorrect factors of production (land, labour, enterprise, capital). Like some enterprise shouldn't be used and it makes such an unnatural amount of bad out of it, and not seeing in economics the limit of what should and shouldn't be traded. what is valid as an economic transaction. in economics , stuff like human trafficking, alcohol and such is already deemed to be negative and hence not included in.

so the problem is the DEFINITION and the created categorisation of what and what not to produce and where the importance lies (sustainability)

Changing idea: India focus[edit | edit source]

Cows in India:

Truth: Subjective truth - religion, objective - economics

Find the issue in the disciplines after having done research , because like the guy who lookeed at anthropology and economics he found that the issue lies within the definition of economics and anthropology.

Subjective truth has a value: Indian culture surrounding the cow IS subjective AND it’s so important. Way they do their religion/live their lives is positive

INTRO

PARA 1: Philosophy

Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism: all view the cow as sacred - that IS their truth. Utility links to economics

PARA 2: Economics

agriculture - resource. McDonalds? Current issue. Pressure groups?

PARA 3: Politics

Urine as health drink political party, campaigns hinge
