Solar Bottle Lights[edit | edit source]

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Cut metal square: 25×25 cm

Use marker or mud to trace bottle bottom.

Use hammer and chisel to cut out a circular hole from the center of the square. The hole should be slightly smaller than the bottom of the bottle.

Use metal scissors to cut 1 cm lines from the circle. A hammer and chisel may also be used.

Match square to the roof so the ridges on the square fit over the ridges on the roof. Use a marker to trace circle from square to roof.

Use hammer and chisel to cut out a circular hole in the roof. Inside the house, one person should use a long stick to provide resistance while the other cuts.

Slide bottle half-way into the hole in the square, so it fits tightly.

-Fill bottle with water.
-Add one teaspoon of bleach to keep water clean.
-Cap the bottle tightly.

Insert plastic bottle (with square around it) through hole in roof. Make sure square sheet fits flush against roof top. Apply steel tape on square and around bottle to hold in place and prevent leakage. (Note: steel tape is usually 5 cm in width. You can cut this in half, length-wise, to use less around the square. Use small strips to patch holes around bottle.)

Test for leaks buy pouring water over the square. If leaks are seen from below, add more tape on top of areas where water might be coming in.

Enjoy solar light! Light will only work when the sun is shining.
